Re: Can't get 27' Bayliner Ciera to plain out, takes very long, just me driving

After the fact; my info indicates a 5.7 260 and 250 with a 1.47 and a 5.7 260 with a 1.65.
The 1.65 produces 34.1 at 4500 1.47 at 4500 produces about 38 both these speeds are close to what he reports. I would think we might find a 1.65 in a 5200lb boat.??
It does seem to me that 2 minutes to reach wot rpm is a very long time It seems that something other than prop selection is at work.

Listen to this advice, please. It's exactly what I was trying to say in my first post. Just buying props isn't going to help. SOMETHING else is wrong. While 260hp is not a TON of power for that boat, it is NOT underpowered to the extent you are experiencing. The time to plane issue is not just the prop.

Understood, I will confirm the gear ratios for sure, and get back to you guys. Keep in mind that the 4500 rpms is immediate. The 2 minute time period is how long it takes to plane out typically, when being at 4500 rpm's the entire time, from out of the hole.

4500 RPM from the time you hammer down until you get on plane???????????? You have some serious slippage going on.

either that, or other issues. I just got it winterized and some small work done, I don't think they would have noticed that, but they powered it on and did tests. I've also had a compression test done, no issues. Motor is 2 years old.

You're right, I didn't anticipate to spend that much, but it's more than just swapping out the drive and turning it on. I think I will try the 4 blade, and see how that goes. Should I go aluminum or steel? I understand that the steel will mess up gears in shallow waters, but will be more affective.

Ayuh,... There ain't no Steel prop, 'n SSteel is Expensive...

Go with aluminum atleast til ya get this sorted out,...
Then decide if the investment in SSteel is worth it...

In my mind, SSteel Ain't worth it...

4500 from start I wonder if the prop may be undersized? (diameter)Or badly worn?

Badly worn? it does have a few spots on it where it might need to be repainted, but other than that.. it's in decent shape, not chipped or been grounded on anything.

Re: Can't get 27' Bayliner Ciera to plain out, takes very long, just me driving

let's assume it's a 1.47 ratio. I cruise at about 35-38mph (sometimes up to 40) with my 15 pitch 3 blade aluminum prop. RPM's are around 4500.
My calculator does say 38.3 so we,re all in the ball park, also indicates
40 would indicate 8% slip a pretty low number for that "load"
The "around 4500" does make me wonder if there are some actual rpm numbers out there?

If the diameter is undersized it may get fouled with exhaust untill up to speed.

You may find the diameter under the prop nut or measure from center to tip of a blade and double. Also note how the hub fits the gearcase. If it seems undersized it may be an outboard prop.

with the 4 blade prop set at 14, will that help at all in top speed? or will it decrease my speed?

Assuming your rpm is accurate, theres that rpm thing again, your present prop is producing good speed with excellent slip numbers. If it turns out your rpm is higher then you would have higher slip numbers and a 4 blade might at least maintain speed.
Usually it is suggested to reduce pitch to maintain rpm when adding a blade.
Typically with good existing performance adding a 4 blade will slightly reduce top end
while inproving hole shot, ability to stay on plane at reduced throttle, with better handling around the dock.

Since it has had a motor and drive change,it is possible that the coupler has a problem....

Do you use your trim tabs to improve hole shot? (increasing down force)

Pretty sure the drive is original to the boat Wouldn't they smell rubber burning if the coupler was slipping?

Re: Can't get 27' Bayliner Ciera to plain out, takes very long, just me driving

I'm not trying to have a top speed of 65mph, and it sound like a race car. I just want to get out of the hole quicker and plane out faster. It's very frustrating and dangerous because I can't even see over the nose of the boat to see where the hell I'm going. I have to make sure I have a solid 200-300 yards of open water (that I know well) before I can actually hope another boat doesn't speed in front of the boat. I like to stop/go a lot, because where I am, the water tends to push me regardless of how many anchors I have in the water, and also I like to explore new parts of the river that runs out to the ocean, and we're constantly moving around and stopping/going. I'm investing into a windlass soon so I don't pull my back out every time I lift up the anchor.

I love my big cruiser, it's nice, sleeps 4-6, and I have a generator that I use to power everything when the boat is shut down. I have AC, as well as a galley, flat screen TV, blu-ray player, all the kitchen stuff I need, fridge stays cool, and I can take weekend trips to the beach in it. Gas is pretty pricey, but that's just what you have to understand when buying a boat like this. I got a good deal on the boat, but since it's much bigger than my 20 foot ski boat, I'm having to learn all this stuff on my own. It's a huge transition, but a great one.

Could be a few things going on here it seems the engine is struggling to push the boat on top of the pressure wave.....you stern is dragging here a little...:D So two things come to mind first your trim tabs..they are vital on a boat of that size..QC might chime in or 45 auto they both have big boat experience...you need to use them.

From there check your engine timing it is very possible it was not done correctly it happens more than you know and that to would make a huge difference. Assume nothing in a new to you boat..;)

What is the actual year of the engine and does it have Vortec heads and a 4 barrel carb
