Can't get Alpha one Gen II outdrive back on.

I've finished servicing my entire outdrive and am trying to install it. It goes on a little ways then stops hard just short of the bellhousing bolts protruding from the upper unit. I have my control box in drive, the dog and shift shaft are lined up, and when I try to turn the prop shaft CCW it hard stops. When I turn the prop shaft CW, it turns and the shift shaft pops up and down so I won't let me turn the gears to line up the drive shaft with the engine coupler.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, don't turn it CW, old joke. Turn the prop shaft CCW to keep it in forward and turn the shaft.

What's the last "shaft" in your response referring to?

Did you have any trouble pulling the drive off before you serviced it?

If your alignment between your gimbal bearing and the engine coupler is off, the shaft binds and won't want to go on.

Well I just replaced the gimbal bearing and checked the alignment with the coupler using the proper alignment tool. All was good.

If you have a lot of grease on the orings on the splined shaft. Clean the grease off, and out from under the orings. It will actually hydrolock those orings and prevent the drive from going on. Put some oil on the orings and put the drive on. You may have to push a bit to get the orings started into the gimbal bearing, but that's kind of normal for new orings.

The rings were new and there was grease on them so that was likely the problem. I provided a little (lot) of "encouragement and she finally went together. Thanks Don and the rest of y'all.

Try putting the shifter into the "forward" position then try installing it again.
