My children were going to use my boat and they couldn't shift into reverse. They picked up the engine to see if weeds were stuck around the prop. They couldnt drop the engine and they noticed that there was a broken plastic part and a cable hanging loose. The engine is a 1990 48 Johnson Sp. I replaced the part which is called a shell and it fits on a small ball under the motor housing. Does anyone have any idea in how to get the engine to drop after you move the lever to the drop position. What is the purpose of the cable that run to that ball.
