Can't get gearcase oil screws out

Both of them were pretty locked up. I was able to get the bottom one freed by putting a channellocks on the screwdriver. The top one is causing me more trouble. I tried PB blaster and one of those hand impact drivers. I'm not sure what the next step is. Should I hit it with a blowtorch? I'm worried about what issues that might cause.

Whose idea was it to use a flathead for these screws anyway? :)

What would you guys do next?

Flathead screws were a must in that situation... anything else would eventually round off.

A hand held impact screwdriver is what is needed to remove and install those screws, available just about anywhere, Sears, parts stores, etc.

That's actually what I was referring to with the "hand impact driver", sorry for the terminology mixup. :)

I ended up getting it by applying extra manliness. I took a small screwdriver and put it at the edge of the screw and tapped it with a hammer until it broke free.

Thanks!

So why do they still use slotted screws even today for gear oil drain/fill plugs ?

Why not socket head (Allen) or Torx ?

I'll be replacing mine since i stripped it a little bit pounding on it. But I'll just be getting the stock type, I'd rather not turn my motor into something only I understand. :)

When I was looking for those parts, I did stumble upon hex ones when googling the product number for the stock screws. They are at competitor website so I'll leave it there.

The repair kits for the lower units now come with new screws for this.-------Allen head wrench required.----------These screws are almost a universal fit too !!
