Hi everyone,,well, finally got my new-to-me out drive back on the boat, but ran into another problem.I cant get the prop off to transfer to my new out drive. Is there a trick to it?? I read about a puller,is there anything else I can try before I fork over all that money for a puller.heres a picture of the prop I am trying to get off.

I am a Mechanic, and have a wide variety of tolls, any ideas? I read that a torch can be used, but i don't wanna ruin the prop,or the out drive. If you need a better picture, let me know,I will take one,and post it now.

Ayuh,.... At Best, rig a puller, 'n use Penetratin' oil...

At Worst, Cut it off...

Folks don't Grease the propshaft annually, 'n this Stuff happens...

I recently bought a little outboard with this problem...
Ain't fixed it yet,...

I like the best senerio Bond-o,been soaking it with PB Blaster,Want to avoid the worst senerio, because its my only prop,I see that theres rubber in the middle like some harmonic balancers,so i wanna avoid hurting that. How strong and the inner fins? Lets see what I can come up with today, thanks

I hesitate to smack the prop shaft with a steel hammer- I did that a long time ago to a riding lawn mower and I ended up mushrooming the shaft to where the nut wouldn't fit. Took me a couple hours with a thread file to fix that mess.

That's a rubber hubbed prop. Heat it to any degree and it will need to be re-hubbed.

Penetrating oil and a gear puller inside the prop on the flanges is the best bet. Sometimes that doesn't work and in that case, your only choice is to heat the center to melt the rubber hub. Have the prop re-hubbed and if you need to old outdrive, cut the bronze hub sleeve off. Sometimes the gear puller will pull out the hub from the prop body. Again, cut off the hub itself.

Brewman,I know the feeling,I have to repair axles all the time because of the Mechanic in training has messed up a few, plus messed up more then everyones share of spindles.I know better to whack on that.
Frank, thanks for the info,I have a puller that i am creating between cars,i will get some pics up when its done, and let ya all know how it comes off.Hopefully, the hub dont pull apart, and I dont have to heat it,but if so,I guess if heat is the last resort,I will have to get it re-Hubbed,was hoping to get on the water this weekend since we missed last weekend because of the drive not going back on like it was suppoised to.

Re: Cant Get Prop Off Old Out Drive

* Update * I finally got my prop off, after soaking it for 3 days in PB Blaster. What I did was,I put my out drive in my home made out drive stand, and with the prop up against the wood legs, with my friend holding pressure pushing the prop against the wood,I took a air hammer, and ever so lightly use it on the shaft, and the prop came off slowly, with NO damage.I looked at the splines and they had a ton of corosion built up on them.Used a wire toothbrush and some brake clean,to clean it all up.Used some spline grease to install it,and now I am good to go.Thanks for all the help guys !!!!!!
