cant get the flywheel off,broke grade 8 bolt

66 evin lark8,,,was going to replace coils and points,,,,used a puller and stretched the bolts,,,went and got some grade 8 and broke one,,even tapped on the shaft a little,,not too hard,,,,using impact to run down the puller,cant get this thing to budge,put a big bar on the puller, and a flywheel wrench on it with cheater bars ,,then broke of the grade 8 s,,got it out luckily,,,,,,,shaft and flywheel are not rusty and everything is really clean,this motor was hardly used,,,any ideas how i can get this thing off,,,already have new coils and points to go in,just cant get the dang flywheel to slip a little,,,,,,,also,with my point set,there is a small capsule with some lube or something in it,,what should i use this for?

Put a strain on it and walk away. They may"creep" over time and pop when you are not there. Saves time and frustration. If worst comes to worst, put a LITTLE heat on it while under tension. It should pop. Rick

i thought about gettin it tight and walkin away,wish the elves would put the firing squad in for me overnight too,thought about the heat but was kinda iffy bout heating that up,,i will def try that tho,its been a frustrating day with this thing,,what about the capsule with the new points set?thanks for the help rjezuit

Put the puller back on and get it tight, hit the top of the puller with a mallet until it comes off.

It won't hurt anything unless you are using a two pound beater. Lift up on the flywheel (against the end play) before whacking.

Somebody might have put locktite on the tapers last time it was off. If they did, good luck.

When you do get it off and are ready to reassemble, make sure the tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft. Lbs.

When I pulled the flywheel on my '54 Johnson 25hp last year I stripped two of the holes. So I re-tapped both holes and used 5/16" bolts. Then I stripped one of the 5/16" holes so I re-tapped and used a 3/8" bolt! Then it finally worked. So I now have 3 different sized holes in my flywheel. I hope never to have to pull it off again!

Right, bearings if you go nuts, put a prybar under the flywheel and lift up a little like f_r said to take up the endplay, a couple good hits should pop it off. Just take your time and it will event come off.

The little capsule is grease for the points. There is a part on the points that rubs on the cam. This needs some lube. From the factory there was a woolen wick which lubricated the cam and the points that rubbed on them This often degrades, so the after market adds a capsule of grease to lube the cam. Rick

Leave the flywheel nut on a few turns...just to keep the wheel from flying...especially if you leave the elves to do the work.

broke grade 8 aswell as you inquired around fastenal has grade 9 -150,000 tensile strengh compared to grade 8 - 120,000 bought 6 bolts installed in flywheel and used impact till something happened bolts won flywheel came right off hope this helps

Gotta tell this story (again). A guy came to our shop and bought a set of points. Looking in the box and finding the capsule he asked what it is for. My co-worker who was selling him the parts answered dead-seriously "You swallow that pill 15 minutes before installing the points. It dialates your eyeballs so you can set the points without a feeler gauge". Still wondering how long the grease affected his digestion.

thats hilarious f_r,,didnt know there was grade 9 bolts,thanks vxtech,,leaving the flywheel nut on so it wont fly sounds like a great idea good idea mas,,,ok ,,just dont go melee on striking the shaft ,was thinking there was a seal there with the bearings but dont wanna mess up either,,,,im gonna try it today,,,puller,hammer,heat,,its comin off today dangit,,,,thanks everybody,,i will post on whatever turns out to be the most effective remedy

Loosen up the flywheel nut and leave it on, just above the threads on the crankshaft

Put the puller back on, run the three bolts ALL THE WAY thru the flywheel. Tighten up the center bolt on the puller, and then give it a half turn (or as tight as you can get).

Whack the center puller bolt a good one (pretend it's your little brother). Retighten the center bolt.

If the center bolt won't tighten, spray spme PB Blaster around the shaft and go watch some tv, have a beer, ect.

Come back a few hours later and repeat the last 2 steps.

It will come off.

pb blaster is exactly what i used yesterday,,its been marinating in it all night so maybe some goody got in there...were those last two steps ,tighten the bolt and get a beer? or spray it again and get a beer?,,,oh yeah,tighten puller then smack the shaft ,it pops off,get a few beers,after music in my head of ahhhhh!!!! and rejoicing,,gonna go try it again now,if it happens pretty quick ,,i might wait a couple o hours for the beers,,its only 8 and im not 20 anymore,,thanks 14ftgrumman

didnt get started till later than i wanted,,but finally got it,replaced coils cond and points,,gen belt is old and broke,,so looking on iboats for that,,soon as i get that,i will try it in the barrel and see what happens,,thanks for all help,,everybody,,,,enjoying some beers now
