I am trying to get the foot off the motor to rebuild the water pump. All the fixing bolts are off and its dropped down about half an inch. Any trick to getting leverage to pull it off? its very awkward to pull on with level force.

What year is it, and did you disconnect the shift rod?

its an 87. i didnt disconnect anything but the fixing bolts. I looked at it and it seems like i have to take the powerhead off to disconnect the shift rod... i hope thats not the case.

Not sure on your motor, but there may be a 2" X 3" plate on the left side looking at the motor on the leg. Behind this plate is a shift shaft connector. Take the lower side bolt all the way out and it should fall off. If there isn't a plate on your motor, look between the halves you have apart and look for the shift shaft connector between them. You shouldn't have to take the powerhead off. There is a way to take the shift shaft apart somewhere. Post a model number and the pros can tell you exactly where it is. Might be a good idea to get a manual for it also.

Shift shaft can be accessed with a 1/4" drive knuckle and a long extension or by removing the carbs for better access is the preferred method by some. Yours may well be different though for all I know about that motor. Post your model number and we can take a look at the diagrams.

I Have a 90 and you do have to disconect the shift linkage.Mine has two brass fittings. Hold the bottom 1 and remove the topone. You then have to slide the top fitting up on the shaft to remove a small nylon cone that keeps the fitting on. It's split but be careful you don't break it as it takes 3-4 days to get a new one. Don't ask how I know that
Hope this helps

I have an 1989 20 hp which should be similar to your motor.

For my motor, there are two bolts that connect the shift linkage. These are located behind the plastic water intake screens. The screens are located above the gearcase and below the cavitation plate. Remove the screws that hold the plastic intake screens and take the screens off. Then you will see the upper and lower shift rods connected by two nuts. Hold the bottom nut with a wrench and open the top nut with another wrench. then slide the top nut up. You will see a black plastic retainer type part that has a split in it. You need to remove that plastic part and then the nut will slide off. You should be able to separate the lower unit after you do this.
