Can't identify my motor

I purchased this rebuilt Evinrude from a local shop who told me it was a 1993 90hp. It seem quite a bit larger than my previous 1983 Johnson 90hp although that may be irrelevant..

There is no plate on the outside of the motor or the transom mount and no stamping. There is no stamping to be found after removing the cowl either. The freeze plug has a long number on it but no model number.

My first clue that this wasn't correct was when trying to buy a carb rebuild kit and found that the 93 90hps had a different carb setup, the big one, and mine has 4 small ones. The shop I got the kit from said the 4 carbs were a '95 thing and gave me the '95 kit but only the float needle assembly and float fit my carb.

Recently I wanted to rebuild the rest of them but couldn't find the part #398743 on the carb body or #333525 on the bowl anywhere to identify the actual year and rebuild kits.

Then I decided to check some more part numbers, and found that my cylinder head part #339154 does match the 1993 120hp motor.

Can anyone give me a good and certain way to identify this thing? Am I running a 120 that the previous owner camoflaged as a 90 or just missing something blatant?

Re: Can't identify my motor

Cylinder head 0339154 was use on the 1994 120 and 140 and more recent motors. Check your other engine parts against the parts catalog for the 1994 Evinrude 120HP: http://shop.evinrude.com/

BTW, Casting numbers are on many individual parts and are generally not part numbers.

Re: Can't identify my motor

I've come farther on this now. From parts and forum help it's narrowed down to either 1989 or 1990 from the 88-91 model run.

A user informed me that 1988 did not have the trim switch on the lower cowl. Verified this on a parts diagram. I have this switch.

A user informed me that the 120 has two screws in the butterfly valves and the 140 has 3 screws in each one. My motor has 3, so 140 but I haven't been able to verify this on a diagram yet but I'm going with it.

Checked tilt/trim diagrams while working on a tilt problem I'm having right now and the 1991 PTT system is different.

So, 1989 or 1990? Can anyone help me with a specific for either of these two years finally nail it down? I've noticed the shop manuals go up to 1989, then another one from 1990 and up so I have to assume there is some critical difference here?

Re: Can't identify my motor

There are annual factory service manuals for 140 and 120 loopers from 1985 through 1994. You must be looking at aftermarket manuals if they cover more than one year.

You should have a welch plug centered between the cylinder banks with a serial number; your BRP dealer can get the model number information if you give her that number.
