its a 91 100 hp. been trying to get it above 4100 rpms. last time i went out it ran great right before it ran out of gas. so last night i has someone drive while i went back and started disconnecting the fuel line. about 1/2 second after fuel line is disconnected it raors up to 4800 rpms. i only disconnected it for about 2 seconds at a time. oh yeah ive also had problems the two times i put gas into it. it burps up fuel even pouring at a slow pace.

my questions:
can too long of a vent hose (5/8") cause this problem. (11ft)
could it be the new bulb i put in last year used five times.

current plan unless great minds of this forum change my idea:
drill a new vent hole towards the back of the boat and make the vent hose about 5ft with easier access to the vent (instead of behind my side cushion)

Sure sounds like your fuel flow is restricted. A long vent hose should be no problem if its not plugged. Have you tried running with the filler cap removed? That would allow you to remove your existing vent line from the equation.

Sounds like it's running rich until you disconnect the fuel line. The carburator float is either hung up or the needle valve is leaking.

Burping up fuel also indicates the same carburator problem.

THANK YOU for the replies!

taking the fuel fill cap off for a few - i will try that!

i am confused on how carbs can cause burping of fuel out of the fuel fill (at gas station out of the water) when pouring at a slow pace (slower than the first click on the handle)

does your vent (5/8") line hang below the fuel level in your tank? this could create a liquid trap and not vent causing what you call"BURPS".

the tank is below the deck and the vent hose is above the deck.
i will pull the vent tube at the tank end and blow in it, to listen for some fluids.

by the way, is there a boating term for my "burping" proplem. what do i call it when i start pouring gas into the tank and it splashes out the top of the fill?

Re: Cant keep disconnecting the fuel

Sorry, misread your description. I thought fuel was burping out of the carb at slow speed.

you had me thinking. if the problem is not with the tank. my first place to go will be the floats.

Why not hook up a 5 gallon portable tank and try that, should elimainate everything right up to the motor.

Fuel line is cheap. Just move the fittings from the short hose onto a longer one and try with the little tank.

Your fuel tank is 'blowing back'. Just make sure the vent line doesn't drop below the level of the tank at any point along its length. The best thing is for the vent line to be continuously rising (sometimes impratical). If it does drop below the tank level, that's how you'll get a pocket of fuel in it that will cause the blow back.

Chris..............

Re: Cant keep disconnecting the fuel

thanks for the termanology of the "blow back".

took the boat to the lake for a test last night and disconnected the vent (didnt help). unscrewed the fuel fill (didnt help). changed primer bulbs on fuel line (didnt help). the only thing that hels is disconnecting the fuel line for a second at a time. looks like i get to take the carbs apart again. is there any way to tell if a carb float is stuck or needle valve is leaking. other than - take it apart - put it back together - go to the lake for and hour (30 miles away) and try it all again if it doesnt work. sure hope i can get it, that motor sure sounds good for the second when i remove the fuel line.
