Can't pull my lifter out!!!

the motor is an '87 165 HP Mercruiser (224ci)

I am trying to get the lifter out with an extended magnet from the rod hole in the head and pulling it out of the push rod cover.

All 7 other lifters came out easily with just the magnet. The collapsed lifter must be mushroomed out from slapping the cam and i cannot pull it out (even with vice grips)

Is there any way i can get this out without pulling the cam out and dropping it down in the motor?

I do not want to heat this if possible. I cannot get to the bottom of the lifter to heat the part i need and i dont need to be starting any fires.

The motor is fully put together minus the valve cover and the push rod cover.

Let me know anything to try or how you would go about fixing this.

Thanks in advance

Pick up a lifter remover tool at your local parts house. There is probably a bit of crud on the bottom of the lifter...

They might have such a tool at Autozone, that they will lend for free.

Hey, thanks for the idea, I'll try this tomorrow!

However, i am not sure it is crud on the bottom of the lifter. All of the other 7 lifters slid right out with a very small magnet. This one slides up about 3/8 inch and then "hooks"

Do you think it is possible that the lifter mushroomed out on the bottom from slapping the lobe of the cam? Seeing how it didn't have any pressure to hold it tight to the cam during operation.

If you had valve train issues before the lifter swap I would not re-use that cam anyway. It could have a flat lobe and more than likely does if the lifter was'nt spinning. With the cam out you should safely be able to lower the lifter and fish it out. If it is mushroomed and you force it out the top you could damage that hole. Just lift it high enough to get the cam out.

Chances are that if you got the rest of the lifters out, there is no gunk on them holding it in. Your problem will be the cam lobe has worn and mushroomed the bottom of the lifter. You still have to get it out to remove the cam and needs replacing. I've used vice grips on them twisting it.
