Trying to replace the impeller on a 1964 evinrude fastwin 18 hp. I've taken the five bolts out and the unit dropped slightly but when I removed the lower bolt/screw on the shift linkage the unit will not come loose or out of the housing. Sprayed oil on and cleaned around the area (some carbon buildup) but no help. What am I missing? Also, I notice that whoever performed maintenance before did not install a gasket where the gear assembly mounts up to the leg. Is this normal. Please, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

assuming you completely removed the lower screw from the brass coupler which joins the upper and lower shift rods...2 possibilities for the lower unit not coming off that I can see..1. the lower shift rod is still being held < squeezed > by the brass connector...2. the driveshaft splines are stuck in the crankshaft. For the first, try prying open the slot in the connector so the lower shift rod will release. If the driveshaft is stuck in the crank, trying working some wooden or plastic wedges into the opening you have and see if you can wedge it off. Personally, I've taken a 2x4 the length of the av plate and, working side to side, front to back, and beaten the lower unit off. Should you try this method make certain you strike the 2x4 as close to the exhaust housing as you can as you will be running the risk of cracking the av plate. It was a last resort in my case. Good luck. Make certain to grease the drive shaft splines, no grease on the top of the d/s. when you reinsert the lower unit. There's also a groove at the top of the d/s for an o-ring. Make certain to put one on.
You may get lucky and only need to twist and jerk some on the lower unit for the d/s to come free..hope this is the case.

No gasket there.
Either the shift rod is stuck in the coupler after bolt was removed, or driveshaft is stuck to coupler at powerhead. Remove upper bolt from shift shaft coupler and see if it comes apart (you can lightly pry on that coupler while moving the shift lever to pop the shift shaft out of it.). Post back..
Good luck!

Thank both of you gentlemen for responding. I did think your suggestions were the way to proceed but I am the original 'bull in the china shop' and have learned to back off some. I think it is seized in the coupler since there is so much carbon buildup on the rod. Will try to pry it loose with a screwdriver and I wasn't sure about using the shift lever as a means to pop it loose either. May get some PB Blaster, soak it and try all suggested. Thanks so much for helping. Bravo11 out (old retired first sergeant).
