Can't remove my lower unit...

I'm attempting to remove the lower unit off a 85 Evinrude 40 Hp VRO outboard. I do have a shop manual but it serves a large range of models and years. I have also read a number of other threads that refer to a cover with two screws where you can access the shift rod. I don't have any such cover on my particular motor. I have removed ALL of the bolts that attach the lower unit and have tried shifting in Forward and turning the prop clockwise. I have also drained all the oil. The only other place I can think to look is behind the starter. Just thought I would ask anyone who has done this even once more than I have before I remove the starter. Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:D

It is not exactly behind the starter, but pretty close to it.
If you look at the remote cable hookup on the side of the engine you will see that it moves a rod that lays horizontally in front of the block under the carbs.
At the other end of that rod you will find a bolt that needs to be loosened.Once you have done that you can disconnect the shift rod over there and lower the lower unit.

Thanks, I got it apart the other day still had to remove the starter just to swing it ouy of the way to get at the bolt attached to the shift rod. Got the new one and installed it in about an hour. The only question I would have for next time would be reassembly. I assume in the future that liquid gasket is not the way to go very difficult to reseat the housing over the impeller with that stuff being wet. Had to place the new impeller in the housing first then work it down the driveshaft and over the key just right to get a good seal without making a mess, it took a few tries. I'll be testing it out in a week or so. In the middle of redoing all the electrical right now. Thanks again:D

If you bought a kit, most of the seals would have been included. Look at a parts list and you can see the items that normally would be replaced with the impeller. Typically the water tube gasket and the o'ring or gasket for the housing, and if you have excessive wear isn't bad to replace the wear plate.

I always replace the o-ring on the drive shaft into the engine because it can get nicked etc when reassembling but less likely with new ring. Oh yeah and the exhaust seal if cracked or caked with too much carbon.

Very small cost for the seals vs the main impeller.

Luck now
