Can't Shift Gears! Engine Racing Too Fast

Hello,

Oh boy, a new problem:
Cannot shift gears because I cannot slow the engine down!
RPM's stay at 1000 to 1700m not allowing me to shift.
I have to kill the engine, shift to neutral, wait a few secs, and restart the motor and shift. When I restart, the idle is always around 600, right where it should be! So I know that the idling is set right.

I think that my problem is in this thing?
Can it be adjusted? This is a little scary around the docks!

Sorry just trying to clarify here. What gears are you trying to shift?

Are you saying that when you are in neutral with the drive throttle straight up after throttling forward that it won't go back down to idle (600)?

When I start the boat it idles at 5-600 - perfectly.
If I go into reverse or forward and leave it at idle speed, all is well.
It's when I try to slow dowm from say 3000 rpm that it hangs at about 1500rpm and won't slow down any more,,,,won't go back to the 600 rpm again.
And since it is still racing the engine,,,,the shift cannot be made until I kill the engine and return to neutral, restart, and then I can shift

NOT cool, at all - very difficult 'round the docks

while docked , with engine off...take motor cover off and see where the cables go to the carb.....shift the engine into full throttle forward , and re-inspect cable positions at the carb. Go back to control and shift back into neutral and re-inspect cables at carb...see if they returned to closed position , or got hung up on something..let us know what you find...

Sounds like either your control has a problem or the throttle cable attach points at either the control or the engine have slipped. Not only does the cable linkage attach to the arms at both the control and the carb but the cable housing also needs to be secured to brackets both at the control and at the engine. You need to verify this.

First thing you do is disconnect the throttle cable from the carb linkage and see if the engine will slow down. It's possible the cable is getting corroded and hard to move or the adjustment for the cable end at the carb is off.
The cable should be adjusted to add a slight preload to the linkage to the idle position.

PS: saying you have a Bayliner 2452 doesn't tell anyone what engine you have or what year it is. Both are really helpfull for how to adjust the linkage.

to much air, to much fuel a cable not allowing a throttle plate to close.
with all the information you gave us thats all I can say,
we dunno if ya gat a carb,TBI or MPI, yet.
in fact we dont even know if its gasoline,diesel or kerosene.
we happen to be behind a monitor and cannot see what you have.

Looks like this girl will be getting her hands dirty again next w'end! That's the next time I can get to 'her',,,,darned work really gets in the way of a good time.

This picture will help you understand what you have to do. The cable is threaded were the barrel (b) is located ( you will see it, trust me) just turn the barrel so the end at the carb linkage (a) is pushed slightly toward idle.

HI - I actually FIXED this today!!!
The throttle assembly was sorta binding and not freely closing to idle.
So I messed around with it some, made it worse first, and then got it to where it's working smoother than before.
wooHOO Happy Dance time
