the motor in question is a 1981 115 Evinrude
I want to check how engine sounds before i invest time and money on other repairs. The key switch is broken and i wanted to know if there was a way to hot wire to start engine. Also the the kill switch leads are cut what do they need to be hooked up to?

Re: Can't Start

you can unplug the wireing harness big red plug, then with battery cables connected directly to motor and battery, you can jump the solenoid, with a remote starter switch, from auto parts store. you will have to flood the motor or pull the plug wires to kill it when it starts. if you are going to service the motor, get the evinrude specific manual for your motor. 392075 Service Manual-

Re: Can't Start

Thanks, tashasdaddy

I did as you suggested and the motor fired right up sounds good so i ordered the key switch and installed and works well.I noticed that there was no tel tail so i ordered the pump housing with all gaskets and i will begin replacing soon. I also noticed that when i had the earmuffs on with the water in place water was comining out from a hole in front of the lower unit above the gearcase and i have never noticed that on any other boat also water was coming out where the lower unit bolts up is this normal? I have already disconected the linkage and will drop the lower unit to replace the water pump. the question that i now have is there anything that i should look for while I'm in there? The gearcase seems to be fine there is no water in the gear oil and it shifts smoothly.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Can't Start

While on muffs, expect water to squirt out all over the place, including on your shoes. I assume you are talking about the fairly large hole in the lower mount area? Totally normal. If the water didn't come out there it would go up to and posslbly damage the lower main bearing.

as said perfectly normal. glad to here you are up and running. still watch your temp, just because you have tale tell, does not mean the tstats are opening cooling the motor. it is almost 30 years old.

This boat dosent have a temp gauge so i guess i'll repalce the tstats. would it hurt to run without the tstats?

Re: Can't Start

yes, the motor was designed to run at the optimum temperature. without stats, it will run cold, causing carbon build up, low temp ignition.
