Hi folks,
My 92 Four Winns 205 Sundowner with 5.8L Cobra setup can not do a cold start without throttle up a little. Today, at launch ramp, I have a cold start and the starter will not crank at any position out of neutral. The starter will crank the engine when it's on neutral but will not crank at any place as forward or reversed with the central button pressed prior to shiftting. I did some push around on dual batteries because one of them need recharged. Did I mess the shift cable adjestment or I have something else going on?
I will appreciate your advices or suggestions to help me solve this problem. It was embarassing to pull a boat up after launching without power.
Thank you.
Frank

Re: Can't throttle up on neutral start

im no expert but i dont believe the starter will crank the engine in any position other than neutral for safety reasons, when you are giving it a little throttle to raise the idle, are you SURE you are in fact in neutral or just advancing the throttle in gear?

Re: Can't throttle up on neutral start

Thanks for the response.
Yes, I am sure it is not in gear because the engine will crank and try to start when the shift control is in the upright position. Then I depressed the center button (warm-button) to move the shifter slightly forward, then the starter will not work, not even a click. Please help.

Re: Can't throttle up on neutral start

First thing I would do is push the button in and advance the throttle and go back to the drive and spin the prop to se if you are actually now in neutral. If you are, the problem you have is that the control's neutral safety switch is on the edge of its adjustment and not allowing the starter to operate even if you are still in neutral.

Try this. When in the center position, rock the control lever back and forth in an attempt to center the neutral safety switch. Then push in the button and move the lever forward and try again.

You have this control?

I had enough problems with the neutral safety switch(and other things) on mine that I replaced the control.

Yes, that is the one I have on my Four Winns with a red release knob on the handle. It starts acting up a couple weeks ago, things like it tred to kill the engine for a split second during cruise at 2500 or slowly cut out engine at idle. I don't know if you have experienced similar troubles but would like to learn more about a new replacement. Which one did you replace and the cost if you don't mind to share the info.

The control won't cause you to have your intermittent running issues that you mentioned.

In my case, that control was actually attached to a Volvo drive because it was right after the Volvo/OMC merger. I replaced mine with a Volvo control which is basically this one but for some reason, the Volvo one was much cheaper...around $200.

See if Iboats will price match with these guys:

here is the Volvo one which I bought which is basically the same thing.

Re: Can't throttle up on neutral start

OK, I checked last night on the control arm. The propeller engaged accordingly upon pushing ther control arm forward or backward. When the warm-up button was depressed, the propeller will not engage regardless the motion of control arm. What can I do next? I have download the repair manual and have read the chapter 11. It has description on removal and installation but nothing mentioned on neutral start adjustment. Please help.
Thanks,

It won't. You have to dig into that on your own. You would have to pull off the control and adjust the switch your self which basically involves bending the arm on the switch if I remember correctly...been awhile.
