Canvas, Has anyone here tried to make their own?

I have an older Bayliner bowrider,('85). It has the snaps all along the boat & across the top of the windshield for a canvas cover. The original canvas must have been lost in time in some previous owner's garage or whatever. I was thinking about buying a large piece of canvas, cutting to size & installing my own snaps. Has anyone here made their own? Although, I was just thinking about the sewing for the turned over flap around the edge...that could be a problem. I don't have an industrial sewing machine, or a basic sewing machine for that fact. Can this still be done as a DIY project?

It would be a long and tedious project to sew up the edges by hand. I imagine you could score a sewing machine cheap at a garage sale. With the right needle and going slowly, even a "civilian" machine should be able to do the job. Be sure to use ultraviolet-resistant thread.

Canvas won't be wide enough to cover that area. You need to be able to sew to make canvas.

Awning companies can easily whip a replacement for you, as they have the equipment and expertise to do such a job effortlessly.

It's not out of the question for an owner to fabricate their own canvas items, but a heavy duty sewing machine with large needles and special thread is really needed.

If you get into Google, you can find the needle sizes and how to adjust the sewing machine to do such heavy work. You can also purchase quality Surlast or Sunbrella polyester exterior fabrics for between $14.95 and $25 per yard online.

Snap kits are also available with the parts and tools needed to install the snaps.

I made my own snap on cover. It was not too hard but you will need a sewing machine.

I'll hopefully be doing this sometime this year (or convincing my grandmother to do this for me, haha).

I just need a simple flat horseshoe shaped cover for my boat during towing to cover the cabin area.

If anyone has a step by step, that would be awesome.

Some things in life aren't worth the time, effort, and expense over having a "pro" do it. This is one of those "things". By the time you invest in a big enough machine, needles, the material, AND the fact that even a small error in measurment can mean it will end up looking/fitting like a real hack job, I'd find other areas to "save" money and time with. IMHO.

My Dad's second job was as a canvas "sail" maker in the Navy in WWII. After the war we NEVER had store-bought canvas. Dad made everything and sewed it by hand.

My wife has a $1200 sewing machine. Not industrial grade, but it will handle canvas. I cut and pin, she sows and I install the snaps.

Like anything else, go to the library and read a book about it, and then take your time and you'll be proud of your work.

That's how I feel about putting in a new hot water tank or changing the oil in my car. I can surely do it myself and save money, but I have better things to do.

OTOH, boats are a very personal thing to some people. Its a labor of love. Way back when I could have bought a store boat rig, but my first was built by myself just fore the fun of it.

My wife is a seamstress and makes nearly everything, especially lined custom draperies. She has repaired light canvas for others. Had zippers replaced on the heavy canvas by another this year. Her machines were not going through heavy canvas, zipper material, and isinglass. The guy that did the work retired and moved south. He could not find anyone to repair his so he bought a machine and made his own. Now he does not have time to fish, backed up 6 weeks or more at all times.

Ya, the more I thought about it the more I realized it is beyond my talents. There was an old canvas shop not too far away from my house. Not sure if it's still there, haven't been past there in awhile. Better to just buy one & install it & save myself a big headache.

In addition to the machine capable of sewing it you will need a work table large enough to at least lay out sections of it at a time or you will spend a lot of time on your hands and knees. The average work table in a drapery workroom is 6' wide and 10-12' long with a padded surface.

Maxxie, I think you made the right choice here.

I don't understand the big enough machine thing. I used my mothers mid 90s kenmore sewing machine with jeans needels. It worked fine with Subrella fabric.

The problem is with the thread. Typical fabric thread is very thin and the needles are much smaller. When you get into canvas and upholstery, UV rated heavy duty thread is required. Standard thread is approx. 40 weight. Canvas and upholstery UV thread is 70 weight minimum and often runs up to 120 weight. This won't pull thru the small home machine needle eyes.

The Sunbrella fabric is easy enough to sew, w/ one or two layers.

The issues that arise w/ marine canvas is when all the other stuff gets added into the mix.

On my boat canvas, every zipper is covered w/ binding (that adds four fabric layers), every edge is covered w/ binding (four more layers), the Keder welt securing my canvas to the arch has a thick tab, the Strataglass is thick, the rubber weatherstripping is thick, so yes, a heavy duty commercial machine is required to "punch through" all this stuff w/o effort.

Here is a "simple" step, adding binding (sewing through five layers of fabric).

It is "easy" enough to do a good job, w/ the right equipment, putting enough thought and time into the job, but it is not for everyone. I've seen some poor work that I wouldn't want on my boat.

The equipment can get expensive. A nice machine can cost over $1K. Other useful tools are: a hot knife, binder, different types of walking feet and other incidentals, it adds up quickly. The Gore Tenara thread I like to use is about $200 per spool.

As others mention, the other issue is size. When I work on canvas the only place I have that's large enough is the floor, after moving furniture around. The canvas must be flat or it won't be correct.

Yes a man's got to know his limitations. The older I get, the more I recognize that. Time was I knew everything & could do anything! Nowaday, not so much ...

But the one thing I found along the road is I'm halfway decent at boat canvas & cushions. To those handymen/women who wanna try'n sew their own? God bless ya! It ain't as easy as it looks. Plus you'll need to beg borrow or steal the appropriate equipment. Time was you could buy a decent 'refurbished' commercial machine for 4 or 500 bucks. Those days are gone.

It's not for the faint of heart. Given the choice I'm not sure I'd do it over. I moved into a bigger shop on May 3rd. Don't ever wanna move again! Amazing the amount of crap you accumulate. There was stuff in the old shop from the origional owner, circa 1985. But I digress.

Hey y'all, before you embark on sewing your own canvas? Please try to remember your friendly local canvas shop.

Wish I had a table like that when I do my canvas.

Here is my machine:

Sewing with a home machine is an exercise in futility.

That is the way to do the job!

Nice big tables w/ a cutout for a nice big belly is the way to go...

How do they get the stuff off the shelf, climb on the table?

My favorite is the handy bin for the empty Bud bottles.

Thanks for sharing!

Yup. Table's much sturdier inboard. Reinforcements are coming for the 'wings'. Stay tuned.

re. Bud recycle bins. Just trying to do my best to 'save the planet' ...
