Taking everything down to good pink glass will work the best and give you the best bond when you start building back.

Re: Cap in, deck out?

Moving right along! Just installed new transom. Put a layer of thick CSM on aft side, then buttered the hull nice and good. Had to use my through holes to clamp with threaded rod and 2x4's, since those gunwales were in the way. newtransom1.jpgnewtransom2.jpg

Seems like i got a good squeeze out of it. How long till clamps can come off?

Also, My drain hole seems a little high, about 3/4" too high. I thoughttransom1.jpg about building up some resin to slope to it, though that would make any water just sit further ahead?

What about lowering the drain hole? Any ideas why this route could be bad?

Re: Cap in, deck out?

I'd leave everything clamped uop good for 24-36 hrs., it won't hurt a thing to leave them on a little too long but will be bad to take them off too soon.

Leave the drain as is, if you do a good build and show your boat the proper care when you're finished there won't be any water in the bilge... and if water does get in somehow you'll be able to see it and it'll alert you to the fact that water is getting into the bilge somehow.

Re: Cap in, deck out?

actually theres always water in the bilge, especially at the end of the day when i hose down the deck after fishing....

All the water from the deck, people swimming, bringing fish in, coolers, all goes to the bilge. The bilge doesn't get all of it. The hole works where it is, i just have to tip the bow way up to get the last bits out.

I like your clamp set up. Nice work! I filled all the holes in my transom skin because I'm repowering and lowering my drain hole quite a bit. But you already drilled your drain hole right?

Actually i only drilled a 3/8" hole for the threaded rod. That one is centered in the old 1" drain hole. I could go downward from the top of the 3/8 hole and end up with a lower drain overall.

Re: Cap in, deck out?

I am thinking about using 1/2" Marine Ply for my deck. It seems like that was what was in there, but it the old stuff was either mush or swollen. Its only a 16ft boat, with 3 stringers each side (6), and bulkheads.

If I glass both sides will 1/2" cut it? Any input is appreciated!

Follow WOG's graphic for deck layups located here:
"Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms"

You don't HAVE to use marine plywood, a decent sheet of 1/2" exterior grade plywood (ACX/BCX) or MDO, would be sufficient...........

1/2" should be plenty if you follow the layup schedule in WOG's link.

If you can find it, 5/8" ACX could be used, and would only be slightly thicker & slightly heavier.......

Re: Cap in, deck out?

Got the starboard stringers in and PB'd. I left the old port stringers in while doing the starboard side. So far, being my first rebuild, i would recommend this to another first timer. It kept some strength in the hull and made it really easy to fine-tune the new stringers. I laid straight edges from the old ones and easily found where i was high with the new ones. After the PB set, i got to grinding out the port side. SBstringers.jpgSBstringers1.jpgSBstringers2.jpgSBstringersclean.jpgSBstringersclean1.jpg

bulkheads1.jpgbulkheads2.jpg
Got everything glued in and ready to glass. I removed the fuel tank and installed some extra bulkheads in its place. Im going with remote tanks, easier maintenance and there will be NO holes through this deck, other than wiring through a PVC pipe under deck that will drain to bilge.

Re-upholstered the console stuff with grey vinyl and made remove-able shelf for battery work. The battery used to be in the back near the bilge, now moving up under console. cut in a couple cup holders with drain tubes. Replaced fittings on hand rail with new used ones from a great boat salvage yard near me.

How important is it to glass over the top of the stringers/bulkheads?? I have read that it is annoying, and maybe not necessary? an older book from the library says they just glass six inches up the sides.....hmmmmm

Re: Cap in, deck out?

Yep, it's been my experience that many boat makers didn't fully glass in the stringers. But most of the glassed up 6" stringers around here are complete mush, not partially rotten, they are completely rotten. Same is usually true w/ the tops of the stringers.

If you'd rounded over the square corners, the CSM would lay over them better. And if you take the <$50 in materials and a little time to cover the tops, which are end grain plywood and more succeptible to water intrusion, it'd be money & time well spent, IMHO.
