One down; We broke the key way that holds the oil pump to the cam shaft. The motor did not seize. I can't spell! Anyone know best case senerio for parts replacemant? Oil, pump, cam shaft, seals?

Next motor; taping loudly, no lights, sounds major but the motor has full power. It is worse with a load, but can be heard at idle. With the motor out of gear, and gased, the prop is sleepy and moves enough to push the boat. I disconected the shift cable. The boat's in the water. I guess I need to check the prop for nuetral (duh), but the shift lever is sitting on the neutral switch and I can get forward, reverse, and nuetral. It sounds bad. How can I manualy test the oil pressure. Any ideas about this terrible tapping, clacking, noise?

Good question, sorry.
Suzuki DF70TLY, 2000 Models they are 70hp 4-strokes. I love them. I own and operate a commercial charter company off Maui.

It's not a pretty picture, maui girl. I'm not one of the "A" wrenchs on the board but no oil pump means no oil. No oil IS major. Engine may run but that loud tapping noise you hear sounds like big bucks ta hooty. A real mechanic will be with you shortly.

g'luck & c/6

hooty

Thank Hooty,
The motor with the oil pump falure was taken out of service right away. My service guy has it broke down, and I am waiting for a parts list from him. He told me the repair bill would involve 4k in parts. He told me the cam shaft had shattered. When I asked him for specifics I got a clearer picture and reduced the parts to about 1k, I'm looking to get ideas on what is required, parts and labor for r&r on the cam shaft, and oil pump drive mechanisms.
The motor that is making noise is different. The oil in the bag looks fine. I'm not getting any warning, fail safe, or diagnostic information from the brain. I'm hoping it could be a linkage, problem or something in the lower end. What think?

Hey Maui Girl,

IF the prop slowly spins when in neutral, the gears may be rubbing accounting for the clunking noise. Your shift linkage may be out of adjustment. Check to make sure you are in the center of neutral and not slightly engaged. I dont know the specifics of your motor or how to adjust but just a thought.

Re: Captblack., kick'er back, is there a mechanic in the house?

changed gear oil today. Burnt, and metalic, some some flakes of (brass?) plus some silver sparkels.
Question: The prop locks in reverse, but ratchets in forward. I believe this is a fail safe. Should my prop be locking in forward?
The prop doesn't make noise and is free in nuetral, but sounds a bit different than my good motor in forward, both engines allow prop to be manualy spun (by hand) in forward and make a ratchet like sound, but they sound a bit different. One is a 2000 (the broke one) and the other is a 2001.
The lever that hits the nuetral switch is not hitting perfect. I'll play with my linkage a little but I don't want to mess with the factory settings on the linkage that is pre installed.
Any experience out there, something that likes to break, or slip?
I will be cautious, is there any reason to take the prop of? I'm not about to start pulling gears.
How bout the drive shaft inspection plate on the mid unit. Any reason to look inside?
I have a basic shop manual and a parts catalog. Not a ton of info there. All ideas are welcome! Mahalo
