The time has come to buy a new vehicle. Here are some of the criteria required:
4 door, automatic trans, all the power stuff - brakes, steering, windows etc., heated mirrors, comfortable to drive and get in/out.
We have 3 vehicles now, 1967 Galaxie 500, 2004 Sierra 2500hd and the one were are replacing - 2001 Honda Accord EX. I have back problems and getting in/out of the Honda is an ordeal. I like the way it handles both in the city and on the highway, but it's too cramped. I love the Galaxie and the Sierra, but the Galaxie is a summer only and the Sierra is not very easy to maneuver in town.
I have been looking at Buicks, Impalas, Lexus, Fusions, Flex........I'm so confused as to just is the car I want. It was so easy least time, we just bought the sportiest car we liked.....no issues to do with age or aging.

I'm not looking to hear the good things about various vehicles, but only the bad things....like being uncomfortable to drive for more than an hour, or bad sight lines(blind spots) etc

Thanks
Bruce

Re: Car comments

Our 2007 Impala was the worst car we ever had. Completely fallen apart and unreliable by 50k miles. That promted this former GM-only guy to buy an Accord. That being said, I LOVE the new Buick LaCrosse. The new Taurus is awesome and gets great reviews. The Fusion you'll have just as much trouble getting in and out of as your current car.

If you are from a snowy area and want awd try subaru I have one and I love it. My parents have an 07 impala and hate it. It only gets about 27-28 on the hwy.

Re: Car comments

Funny comments here:

You ask for advice and comments and someone just posts up the name of a very expensive luxury car, but no other comments.

Someone else mentions a LARGE sedan only getting just under 30 MPG on the highway as a complaint...LOL

Just like buying a boat, I think you should get out there and drive stuff...and don't be afraid to really look around.

My neighbor just bought an 09 Hyundai Santa Fe. The window stick (which he found in the glove box after the purchase said $26k, the deal sticker had $32k on it and they graciously lowered it to $26k for him. What a deal!

I guess Hyundai is just riding high on their current rep and can do those things...I'd never pay almost $30k for one, but hey, to each his own.

On the flip side, we purchased an 08 Chevy Equinox earlier this year. A couple had purchased it in California, drove it to New Jersey and decided to trade it in for the larger Tahoe. They put 3k miles on it. They paid $32k for it, loaded with heated leather, sunroof, nav, chromies, AWD, V6, etc...We got it for $18k with 3k on the clock and GMs new 100k extended warranty.

Now, my buddy had 3k on his Hyundai now, and it's probably worth (in resale) what we just paid for our car...

To me, unless you've never done it before, it doesn't really pay to buy a new vehicle very often...the cost of simply driving it off the lot the first time is entirely too high.

Personally, I'm an American car guy. I've owned at least 20 cars in the 18 years I've been driving and the best of the best have all been American made.

My wife wanted a new car when I first met her and she mentioned her dad would only let her get something Japanese, so I did my research and she ended up with an 02 Nissan Sentra GXE with a 4 banger and power windows...lol, that was about all the options.

That car is a pile of crap. It ate at least 4 wheel bearings in the time we owned it, and a few years back, when ours hit 87k miles, we got a recall notice saying that foam in the ECM box was breaking down and causing premature failures of the ECM. We took it in, got the friggin foam removed and a month later the ECM died and we got a $1200 bill to have it replaced. We tried to work with the dealership to no avail...they couldn't see a connection, because the foam was removed...We called Nissan USA and explained the predicament, and told them that we were a young couple and this was just the first in a long line of cars we'd be buying as a family. They also did nothing for us...nada...zilch.

Then, when that 120 HP beast hit about 120k, the engine died. Cost more to fix it then the car was worth. So, next week it's going to be donated for $500. There's resale value on a 2002 model for you!

Car got great gas mileage, but that was really it's only claim to fame.

Right now I drive my grandfather's old '00 Mitsubishi Diamante. Nice car, I guess...full of bells, whistles and good looks. Has 65k on the clock and it's going to the transmission shop in about an hour because the tranny is slipping.

That's not to say I haven't had troubles with our American cars, too...I have...but I get so annoyed when people preach the virtues of these foreign cars and their gas mileage and reliability.

Take this Equinox for example. It's so new that all I have to do is rotate tires and change oil. I can drive one wheel up on a ramp and slide underneath. The oil plug is easy to get to with nothing in the way. The oil filter sits about 4 inches in front of the pan, straight up and down and is also easy to get to. I can change the oil without getting oil on myself or my vehicle...something almost unheard of in the aforementioned 20 or so cars I've owned. That, to me, is worth its weight in gold.

That Nissan, you couldn't change the oil unless the engine was cold...you'd burn yourself severely trying to weasel your arm up the back of the engine, past the driveshafts, and around the exhaust flex-pipe.

Plus, our country is kind of going to shiz because nobody worries about American made products anymore...the staunchiest republicans I know drive hondas or nissans...where's the sense of pride? Again, my buddy with the Hyundai...how do you tell someone with pride that you own a brand new Hyundai...I just don't see it.

So, does that help you at all with your search? No...you need to find something you really like for yourself...but it gave me a chance to jump up on my soap box for a second. ;)

Re: Car comments

I'm a big guy, pushing 300, and I still can get in and out of our Aura, Same as a Malibu or G6. While I prefer to drive my truck (2500HD D/A), I have driven the Aura 4-5 hours with no issues.

When we got this, I looked at a bunch of cars including the Accord. Out of all I tried, I really liked the Accord the least. I would have gone with a Camry, but for how little we use our car I could not see paying the price difference. We put under 10,000 KM on it a year.

One suggestion I have is to rent a car for a day or two. Pick one you want to try and find a rental company that rents it. Go for a longer drive but also use it as you normally would. You may not get one with all the bells and whistles, but you can get a feel for how it drives, how the seating and blind spots are etc.

Re: Car comments

My parents had an 01 impala with the 3.4 that would get 33-35mpg hwy. The 01 was three times the car the 07 is. The 07 has the 3.5 and only gets 27-28 hwy on a good day. My fiancee's dad works as a releif meat inspector for the government. They have been using impalas and between 17000 and 30000 miles the front tires have to be replaced due to uneven wear and some suspension components had to be replaced. This isn't just on one car its on a bunch that they have.

FWIW, Mazda 6s 5-door. Am going on 5 years now, and it's still PERFECT in all ways. Nothing replaced except oil, tires, and brakes.

Roomiest car available for both passengers and cargo (that's not a SUV or wagon, that is) and truly fun to drive.

Check it out -- also a Consumer Reports \ Edmunds "best bet". Fully loaded should be well under $30k.

Just my $.02... good luck.

That said, we're looking to upgrade from our Honda CRV to a BMW X3 or X5. Have driven one and it's a blast.

Re: Car comments

I grew up in AK and suburus are everywhere. They're good cars.

If you plan on doing any work on your own vehicle, I wouldn't recommend them, though. What a pain. Even something that should be simple like struts are a pain in the rear.

Re: Car comments

Just to clarify, you have back problems and can't bend down to get into a car? Sounds like any car would be out of the equation and a minivan or crossover should be your focus.

Yes if you are dealing with back issues, go with a small truck were you can sit down first, then swing your legs in.

Wow... a lot of responses, and so soon. I'm a little surprised that the biggest trashing is to the Chevy Impalla. That's one of the cars my wife likes. It's one of the vehicles her ministry uses and she says she feels very safe in it....hmmmmm

Thanks for your comments Subliminal.

As for a BMW....no too expensive of a toy that only costs $500 at each oil change.....Bring money walter

I like the Impala (I sold mine 2002 with 80K trouble free miles)..... ahhh you mentioned Lexus and I have a weakness for them however they hold a bit higher maintenance cost than the Camry.

Comfort?? Pick up a used Caddy. They are proven American quality and do ride nice or just about any full size car. The Taurus SHO has me turning my head since I had an older model there too ;)

I have also looked at full size used Mercedes Sedans but once again parts are stupid costly.

As far as that sense of pride, you might want to check on where any given vehicle is manufactured as opposed to where the company that sells it is headquartered. A great deal of asian car makers build their cars right here in the good 'Ol U.S. of A. At the same time a lot of cars with American name plates are assembled in Mexico and Canada. Regardless of where the vehicle is assembled or where the maker resides a large percentage of the parts are manufactured elsewhere and shipped in for final assembly. For that reason there is a sticker on every new car sold in the USA that details both the final assembly location and the percentage of foreign and domestic parts that make up the whole.

Only the bad things?

Ok, my 2004 Impala doesn't have heated mirrors, it was just the base model.
I have a hard time on long trips, because at 33mpg with a 15.5 gallon useable tank, I don't get to stop for 450 miles.
Oh, and at 125,000 miles and countless hours of idling, the transmission is starting slip a little at initial take off.

Re: Car comments

If you want a good sedan buy a used caddy, never new or you will lose your shorts on depreciation. Oh and maintenance is over the top at a dealership (replace one injector 1K plus).

I personally have owned Chevy, Dodge, Mitzubishi, Volkswagen, and Fiat, but the best vehicle for the money I have found is the Mazda CX-9. It is a cuv with plenty of leg room and is easy on the back.

It sits seven and has a good avg MPG of 24 hwy. My GT (Grand Touring) has all leather seat for all 3 rows, HID auto sense headlights, a 6 speed auto/manual shifting, a backup camera, blutooth integration for hands off cellphone conversation, DVD nav, bose sound w/ subwoofer, Blind Spot monitoring in the mirrors, 275 HP V6, 20" wheels, rain sense wipers, dimming mirror, hitch, heated seats and mirrors, 3 zone a/c and heating (this means 2 separate a/c units), the third row actually fits adults, roof rails for a topper, sirius radio (touch screen on Nav unit), 6 CD changer, keyless entry/auto lock, dual exhaust, and the list goes on for 31K out the door. The CUV handles peppy and swift around corners.

I found that the interior materials were far superior to most American vehicles, which BTW I was disappointed in as I really wanted a GMC Acadia, but they were too proud and wanted 42K after family discount. The only vehicle that I have owned with better design was a VW, but maintenance past the warranty will suck you dry.

My back isn't what it used to be either. Getting in and out of the wife's Saturn coupe is a pain in the you know what. A NEW car isn't in the budget right now but I'm on the hunt for a good SUV. Higher off the ground is a must. Love to find a Toyota 4Runner in my price range. She wants a Jeep Liberty. I have to admit, I've got a thing for Jeeps too.
