i was just wondering how many people have done this. Is it hard or even advised. Just curious because my buddy across the street has a crappy has a 96 chevy van with a 350 he said he would give me if i wanted to put it in my boat. He is the guy i got the cherry picker from and he helped me pull my engine to day.

I highly doubt the blocks are different a 350 is a 350, I would do it, just use the long block and put your marine intake, carb, exhaust, and cooling system on it, Now the MARINE cam may be of different spec as far as duration goes for more low end torque, I'm not sure on this though.

Same everything, maybe you might have to change out the casting plugs, to brass ones. The cams are so close don't bother changing it.We are talking the same series engine correct, year wise.I ask because of the flywheel issue and coupler issue.

Listening to these replies is going to lead to a bad day.
There is a little more involved than R&R the engine.

I think you can find a lot of detail by searching this forum, but I believe the keys are:

Cam - different, to give more lower end power (similar to a truck cam, so it may be re-usable)
Gasket sets - Marine/Non-metalic to prevent rusting
plugs - brass

It can be done, there is no majic to it, but you have to use the right elements to prevent problems and correct performance. Remember fuel systems, electrical systems are not the same as automotive to trap spark and vapors.

lol i don't think i am going to do it. at this time anyway. i will need to read up some on it. And i would be going from a 3.0 merc to a 350 gm. so i know i would need to change out the exhaust and the bell housing ( engine), move motor mounts, make the dog houese bigger, new throttle cable, find out how to mount shift cables. So know that i really think about it my engine is good.
If i mess up my engine i might think about it.

That is if i don't have to tear down the 350 for new cams, pistons, crank and such.

If it?s a 350 to 350/305 swap you need different cam, headgasket, and core plugs (if they are not brass) and transferring all your marine accessories. If it?s a different engine in the boat you need risers, Y pipe, engine mounts, coupler and... it?s a bunch of other things.
mkast is correct you won?t be able to just remove and replace.

Ayuh,... About the Only thing you can reuse is the Transom assembley,....
Everything else will have to be changed,.. Including the outdrive...

welll i guess that really rules it out. But why would i have to change the outdrive. Is it because of the horse power increase.

Your outdrive is geared for a 4 cylinder engine, the 350 is an 8 cylinder engine and will tear your outdrive up in no time.

Yes - 4cyl uses a 2:1 gear ratio, with the v8 you would need a 1.5:1 ratio.

Re: car engine swap out

I think most of us missed the fact that your boat had the 3.0 and you wanted to go to a 350, If your boat already had the 350 well thats easy. Sorry for the confusion
