She got a letter from the registery today, they want her doctor to sign a letter saying that he thinks she's okay to drive. <br /><br />Her, her male-friend and I went car shopping today, the Plan was to look at the Accord,Crown Vic and Avalon. <br /><br />She didn't like the Accord because the back seat was to small, and the shifter was in the middle, she wants it on the colom.<br /><br />Next stop was the Ford place,they loved the Crown Vic because it was so much bigger then what she had before, as soon as she got in it she said she wanted it.<br /><br />The sales men came over, she told him to talk to me. The car she picked out was a basic model, it was dark blue. The sticker price on it was just under 25grand. I talked the salesman down to $18,699, which I think is a hell of a good deal. She put a deposit down so the'd hold the color she wants. <br /><br />She already knows her doctor is going to OK her to drive, but she wants to wait untill its final before she buys it. If it wasn't for that letter she said she would have bought it today.<br /><br />I drove quite a ways with her today, between the two dealers and my dads resterant for lunch it was prolbey about 25miles, not once did I feel unsafe. If she was on a driveing test she would have passed. I made a point or watching how fast she was going, not once did she speed. She's going to be okay.

Weds. a week ago, I had just gotten off work after attending a Safety Meeting about Near Misses. I was driving north on a divided 4 lane hiway in the right lane. I saw a car crossing the southbound sides and proceding to enter the northbound lanes. Ok, I thought, They will stay in the left lane and all will be OK...NOT.. He came all the way to the right lane and by the time I fiqured out what was going on, I had to get all four wheels onto the shoulder and hit the horn. Had I not moved or been really paying attention, he would have crushed me. I was in my 91 Miata and he was in a big Caddy..(guess who would win that one). He and his wife followed me and when I stopped to gas up, I was steamed..then I found out that they were both about 80 and really physically shaken, I thought they were gonna have a heart attack. Then I tried to comfort them and assure them that I was fine, and that it was no big deal. I think we all know better than that. There has to be some kind of testing or something for the elderly to still be able to drive. SlowlySinking, that a wonderful solution to your problem. I am glad that no one was hurt in my near miss.

ryan, please remind her that a simple mistake between the gas & brake turns that machine into a 2000 lb weapon of destruction. <br /><br />when my mother and/or pop have an accident like you described, i'll be on their a$$ like they were when one of us had an accident while learning how to drive. she is back in the accident prone stage of driving. just remember, it'd be easier getting her PO'd over losing her license than comforting her after she'd hurt someone else while driving. vehicles aren't very forgiving when they land on someone...

Think about it. Why are you looking for a bigger car for her? Cause they handle better? they dont. Better on gas? nope. No because deep down you know this can happen again and you want your granny to be safe. I wish you would think about the people on the outside of her new tank.

Glad your Grandmother is OK. It sounds like it is time to get her off the road though. You guys have a good public transportation system down there, buy her a bus pass. Imagine how you would feel if she does the same thing again and isn't so lucky, severely hurting herself, or worse hurting/killing someone else.

Here'a a story you can tell your Grandmother. Four old ladies are tooling along in their enormous old Buick and the front seat passenger says to the driver " Do you realize that you've run through the last three red lights on the street?" The old lady behind the wheel says " Oh my goodness! Am I driving?"

I hope to die just like my grandpa, quietly in his sleep. Not screaming and crying like the three other people that were passengers in his car ;)

The cost of a new car buys a lot of taxi rides. Glad all is fine but the mistake, whilst everyone can make them is quite fundemental would you be happy for her to drive your kids about if not then maybe its time to hang up the driving gloves.<br /><br />Good luck hope all works out fine
