I was out late Saturday on the lake and as usual on weekends I left the boat & trailer hooked up to my pick up in front of my house to go out early Sunday. 9PM I get a call from my neighbor saying he backed into the boat. The boat is a 1981 Glastron SX-190 ( Jay's old project) and the bottom of the boarding ladder was the only damage to the boat I could find.
The trailer is a differnt story. The boat slid up about 8 inches on the trailer. The bottom base of the winch stand weld is cracked open. The rear and front cross beams (4" C-channel) are bent and rotated forward . The 2 cross braces in the middle look straight.I'll try to add photos soon.

He reported the accident to the Insurance Company plus I have full coverage on the boat & trailer.

My question is can I bend these bent pieces back in place or should they be cut out and replace with new ones?
It is a very nice trailer redone better than new and do not want to get a new one.

Also if any body knows where I can find the bottom half a the ladder hook me up!

If it's going to be an insurance job then let someone who does these repairs for a living take care of it. If it's replacing bolt on parts I would make it right myself and have the insurance company pay for my time based on the estimates you get. Hope it all works out for ya!!

Anything Steel can be repaired or replaced, the issue is if its financially feasible to do so, get some pics posted and I am sure we can tell you what to look for in price to repair.

To many times people just say its not repairable when in reality anything Steel can be repaired or replaced and most of the time with the same or better structural integrity.

The Ladder....your on your own

I would let the insurance company handle it with the help of a good trailer or body shop. Might as well do it right and save yourself the hassle.

I agree with letting the insurance company handle things but lets be honest here, insurance adjusters are not always trustworthy and there is no reason why 26aftcab454 shouldn't get multiple opinions on the situation just to make sure the adjuster is on the up and up, agreed?

I`m in the insurance business. Typically the body shop or trailer shop will be in your corner as to getting the proper repairs for the damage done. If they feel the adjuster is short, they will let him know why and what they would suggest to correct. that is why I would entrust the repairs to a shop rather than do it myself.

Re: car hit my parked boat & trailer

The car that hit the boat was a friend of my neighbor and the neighbor had parked the car(small SUV) while the were on vacation. We live 3 miles fropm DFW airport and it is not uncommon for friends to park here.. If you ever fly in or out of DFW to the North is Lake Grapevine-there is a small island on the South shore and I live 1/2 mile South of it- Wave if you go by!
The SUV was really tore up and the accident was reported to the local State Farm agent but I have yet to hear from anyone other than my neighbor accross the street who was driving.

I am seeking input & info to ensure things are done correctly- I have contacted a trailer shop and they basilcly said we need to get payment inline before they touch it.They also said it is not uncommon for the insurance company to just replace a damaged boat trailr frame- we will see. I would rather have this one repaied cuz it is perfect for the boat. it was totally rebuilt/paint/bunks/wheels/ tires/hubs/tounge/ LED lights/ winch stand/winch strap. The fenders are solid enough to stand on.

one of the bunks now has ripped carpet and the bow eye roller is collapsed.

Thanks for you input!

A word of warning... state farm can be HARD to deal with... They take care of their customers but if you are hit by one of their customers, you often have to work for every penny you pry out of them... Make sure you leave nothing to chance and sign NOTHING until you are completely satisfied.... That's the company I was dealing with that I mentioned earlier... I finally got them to take care of the damages but it took a LOT of talking..... They flat out told me no way dozens of times before they finally said yes.

Sorry about the troubles, but I am glad the boat wasn't ripped up much. I agree with Lipp - that's a nice lookin' Glastron.

Hey, at least the guy owned up to the act. Lots of hit-and-runs. Good luck with the repairs.

we live accross the street for 10 years-and help each other out - he offerd to just pay out of his pocket for the repairs but that's why we have insurance.
and it will cost thousands to fix the car.

Wow Joe that sucks. I just saw this thread, and I hope things work out. I bet they can bend, weld, replace the things on that trailer easy. I think it is a road runner trailer, and they are in Lewisville.

that must have really been a high speed whack to move the boat on the trailer and damage the trailer that bad......

My only advice is that bending metal back into place usually causes additional stress that weakens the integrity of said metal. The repair shop should be on top of that though. Good luck

the trailer is a little bent up but the boat is undamaged cept for the ladder. I get complements every time I go out .

X2 this very wise advice. I was rear ended 18 months ago and I had the ball installed on my trucks reciever hitch. While the Toyota that hit me from behind suffered a major hole in his front bumper, it appeared to me that I suffered no damage at all. I took the truck to the body shop just to have it checked out and sure enough, they found my hitch was cracked and it could have failed while towing the boat.

I squeeked by with a close one.....have that stuff checked out before you tow it again.
