Well, it was that time I had to get a new vehicle for Ms Mayfloat. Went to several lots to see what was there. Just about every lot, we felt like we were pounced on. Only one lot the salesman let us look around for awhile and then came out. We bought our last car from that lot as well.

The other major dealers used cars were nice and clean and the engine compartments were pressure washed and looked good. Then I got down and looked underneath and could see lots on oil on the engine/tranny. Of course the salesmans words is no it doesn't leak or use any. Yeah right, then why is that stuff all over under there? There reply was it was oil and dirt from the road.

Went back to where we bought our last car and looked at an Explorer. I got underneath and everything was dry. Engine compartment was fairly clean and you could tell it had not been pressure washed. Needless to say I bought it.

That was yesterday. Now today we have phone messages and cards in the mail from the dealers. Geesh, I told them we were just seeing what they had. How many times does one have to say "I'm not interested" ? They sort of remind me of politicians. Would this be considered high pressure sales tactics? Just glad I don't have to buy a car frequently...

I was at a mitsubishi dealer getting recall work done, went in, talked to salesman about a few vans on the lot,... said, are ya hungry, sure :) Said, "I buy you fly", so I took a loaner car to go buy us lunch on his dime. Still didn't buy the car, got one phone call a week later, and no hassles since, I was happy with that dealer.

Just won't ever own another mitsubishi. $10 parts cost $100 because they say "mitsubishi" on them.

Kinda like adding the word "marine" to anything.

I always tell the salesman that I'm just looking and I'll let him know if I need assistance. If he comes back after that, I tell him that if he comes over one more time while before I'm ready that I'm going to give the sale to anyone that works there BUT him, if I decide to even make a purchase there. That usually does it. I'm there to buy a car, not to be sold on one.

Re: Car Salemen

Okay, let's start this out right. I sell cars. New and used.

Look at what you stated and it will make sense.

You were not just looking.... you were a buyer. You purchased a used car. The salespeople at the first lot's you visited did not do the job right. You purchased a car from the salesperson who treated you right and had the right car.

Don't fault the salespeople who followed up with a note or a call...they realized you were in the buying mode and not just "looking"

I would not consider the tactics high pressure. Possibly the sales person wanted to make sure you either needed or did not need help....we are terrible mind readers. Some buyers will leave the lot if they are not attended to immeadiately. I normally approach people with a friendly attitude and with a good first impression. If they need assistance I offer it.

Now the true question is, if the salesperson who you did purchase your car from is doing his/her job right? Has he/she contacted you following the sale? If he/she does not maintain the relationship and you ever need another car (and you will) you will be starting all over again.

Repeat business is the car salesperson's reliable income.

Good luck with your car. I love hearing about other people's buying experiances.....it refines my job.

Bob

I deal with 1 dealer and he ain't even close to home.
Everything is done by phone and internet and he will deliver my purchase to me also, n/p.

He follows up by phone and mail and I also get the customer satisfaction forms to fill out and send in.

No pressure sales, I just look and see if he has what I want and if so, I go from there.

If not, I just let him know what I am looking for and he will holler when he gets it in.

Re: Car Salemen

Mayfloat,

Please run your Explorer's VIN number through the recall database. I'm not 100% positive, but I hear some of them had ignition as well as other issues (several Fords have..even my Ranger).

The dealer should have already done this, but you should check to be safe. If it has one of those ignition switches that catch on fire, you could have a real problem if you park it in your garage!

As fas as salesman on anything... not just cars... If I need help with something... I'll ask for it. I cannot stand someone rushing out and practically tripping over me. All I can envision when that happens is a chum-bucket and a school of sharks!
I know they are just doing their jobs and mean well, but I like to look first and ask questions later. My 2-cents.

There was a really good book I bought on how to buy cars, but I mis-placed it years ago can't remember the name of it. It went through all of the tactics the car lots use, deal, close, even how to dress... It was a very informative book.

H.

I was at a dodge dealership this a.m. looking at their used selection. Salesman was at our heels in a second... Asked If he could help... I asked for a price on a car.. he asked is that the only style we wanted? could he interest us in this one over here... told him no thanks just wanted a price on this one... he said well lets go inside and talk about it, I said no thanks i'll give you a card and you can call me when you figure it out... he said and I quote "why dont you come back when you have time to come inside and discuss it." I said no thanks and exited stage left. I was irritated to say the least.

Re: Car Salemen

When my wife wanted to test drive some of the cars, they require a copy of your drivers license. I think that is where they got our address and then was able to find out our phone number.

Bob VT, Yup, your right about us being a buyer, but you have to look first to see what your going to buy. If they don't have anything you want, then your not a buyer. At least that is way I look at it.

Thanks Homerr for the heads up on the recall. I will check it out this evening. This one won't be parked in the garage,,,,,too many unfinished projects still hidden in there.

Re: Car Salemen

When I bought my last truck it was down to either a 2002 silverado 4x4 or a 2001 f150 2x4. I liked both trucks so I was now going for the best deal.I told the ford salesman that I wouldn't pay the price he gave me and that if that was the best he could do then I was buying the chevy. The next morning the ford salesman called me up and told me he was ready to sell and had a deal for me so I drove 40 miles to the lot I just left the night before. When I got there I ask the salesman the deal price and he said "the same price I told you last night" I left and drove directly to the chevy dealer another 20 miles away and bought the chevy.

I have to admit the drivers license thing is a scam. That gives up your identity.

I will not ask for a license nor will I accept one if offered. If I am going to sell a car to a person I want to trust them. Insurance will cover any problems.

If you are ever asked for your license just let them see it and not copy it. Tell the sales person you fear identity theft.... I bet they will back off.

Bob

I deal only with a small dealership, 1 salesman, 4 mechanics about 20 miles from home. Call them on the phone order the truck, about 2-3 months later they call & let me know it's in. Over the last 10 years and 3 trucks, not one problem or hard feeling of being harrassed. Price is always as good or better than the "Monster Blowout" sales everyone has around here. I appreciate their business manners they appreciate the repeat business.

Re: Car Salemen

It is difficult for sales people. They have to read people, change personalities, and remember the personality for each customer. Some people cannot make a desicion on their own and need the "pressure" to do it. Others like to be left alone to decide. As a salesman, I always appreciated the people that gave me hints as to what they wanted (ie. leave me alone while I look around, you idiot salesman!) It makes the salesperson's job easier.

Find a salesman you like, who matches your style, you trust, and represents a reputable lot (if you trust the saleperson the lot will be reputable - a good and trustworthy salesman has a hard time working for a crook) and stick with them. You will be happy for it in the long run and will get good cars at good prices. With the right relationship, your salesman will be calling you saying, "Hey, don't know if you are in the market yet, but we just got a low mileage honey traded in. It will make it through detail and be on the lot in a couple of days, but you can see it in advance if you want." When I was selling full time I had a list of customers that would get such calls, and they loved it because they were walking away with steals, and I was unloading the cream of the crop before other saleman had the chance to see the cars.

Re: Car Salemen

Sounds like those who complain about the salesperson being front and center before the shoe leather hit the pavement aren't compassionate or even serious buyers. Look at it like this, IF you were there after hours and had looked around, developed some questions and needed answers, how would want to be treated? Would you want to have to find a salesperson, or have one treat you as a customer? And some I am sure end up buying a car at a particular dealership BECAUSE they were not allowed to leave the lot without a salesperson offering to help. I don't mean being physically detained, I mean you are looking around, but don't really see anything that rings your bell, but the salesperson approaches, engages you and offers a deal. Now you're hooked, a vehicle that was vanilla, is now superman because you know more about it. A few features that maybe weren't obvious, a great price on an otherwise ho-hum vehicle. And all this would have been lost if you had to go find the salesman. I have never bought vehicle retail from a dealer, I have looked, and I have bought wholesale through a salesperson, and I feel uncomfortable being "pounced" on. But I understand, and tell the salesperson exactly my position. I routinely am left alone unless I approach them after that. So get over yourselves, have some compassion, and treat these professionals with some respect. I highly doubt any "professional" salesperson will bother you after that initial approach if you make it clear, POLITELY, that you do not need their company that you will come to them when you have questions.

Remember, without a salesperson, you could never buy anything. Even in a private party purchase, the private owner is the salesperson. And NO I am not a salesperson, just a compassionate consumer.

BTW, I have no idea about TN, but that is illegal in CA. I just passed the CA DMV test for my dealer license. If there is an advertisement, the car MUST be sold for that amount or lower.
