Car stereo in a boat

Is it ok to install a car stereo w/6 disk cd changer in a boat? Is there a big difference?

Hey Dowg,<br /><br />I don't think there is a world of difference if any, I've never had one apart so I can't say for sure. Maybe the enclosure is the real difference. Mine is completely enclosed in a "water tight" box with a spring latch cover. The cover is a good thing it keeps water and prying eyes out. I also have a radio on my Harley and it has a covered enclosure,<br /><br />I've seen in dash radio boxes where you install the covered box in the dash than install the radio inside the box. Check out www.overtons.com they may have what you need.<br /><br />There is a difference in speakers, both my Harley Dresser and my boat have water proof speakers. I looked into upgrading the speakers on my bike and they were more money then the standard speakers. <br /><br />Good luck

If inside cabin,dont worry. If out,weather proof best you can and go for the water proof speakers. Always understand though salt water will kill anything in time.

Howdy everyone! Just installed a stereo system in my bass boat. Went with a regular car stereo( de-tachable face, cd) mounted with a flip cover and water-resistant speakers. The stereo comes out whenever it's not in use. Even though the speakers are mounted under the consoles, I knew they would be subject to humidity and occasional splashing water. You have to look for speakers that have a sealed cone on the front of them. I ended up with some 6in. pioneer's. Have not had any problems so far.

they say u have to have a marine sealed unit but ive had a sony 10 disk changer and a jensen 300watt amp in my cabin for 4 years now even have a bass cannon in there to havent had one problem

I just installed a car Pioneer cd player in my boat with a front cover ($14 at boat shop) and I bought a set of waterproof speakers from BestBuy on sale for $20. The are small box (external) and the brand is KLH. these speaker are great.

87Stratos has got the idea....that will last years without problems...<br /><br />Costco has an awsome set of watertight speakers for $60 Canadian.....that turns into about $3.50 US....LOL<br />

Many marine head units just have a piece of clear 3m tape across the top to keep water from dripping in on the circutry. For speakers just make sure that they have butyl rubber surround and something like aluminum cones. The standard paper cone will not work for long. Setups for boats do not have too cost a lot of money to have a great sounding system.

I must be getting old, but the last thing in the world I need for my boat is a stereo. My ski boat came with one - I never have used it. The only time it gets used is when my nephews turn it on while I am boarding. When I get on the boat, it is off. <br /><br />I grew up fishing, skiing, we used to spend all day on the lake having fun and making conversation. Imagine that, no TV no radio, just my dad, brother, other relatives, and me talking and enjoying every minute. <br /><br />When some 8f09wmsdk* pulls up behind me with the windows of his car pulsating because of the base of the stereo, I have this urge to get out of my truck and use a crow bar to rip the stereo out of the dash. This is all we need on the water. <br /><br />Urge only, it would be considered road rage to actually do it. <br /><br />Oh well, to each his own in this free country.<br /><br />For my boats, not a chance.<br /><br />An old man, I guess.<br /><br />Arlan

I often thought of installing an old CD player so's I can listen to Sinatra while fishing......then I decided that I wanted to HEAR the walleye bitting! (I'm with Arlan)<br />

Hey guys, I'm young, 24, and still agree no radio on the boat, well maybe for Sinatra or the Rat Pack. I go out for the peace and quite. Anyways, check out Overtons for sure, I have their catalog and they have a large selection of marine audio supplies.

as i think i said earier radios and boating/fishing have there place and time but when walleye fishing u gotta keep em off it really spooks the fish

I've read studies that say sharks are attracted to low bass frequencies, and know of some charter captains that play music to help attract them to their boat (big sharks, over 500 lbs. and up.)<br /><br />They don't know why it works, if the sharks are curious or attracted by it.<br /><br />And, at least they are far enough away (20 to 40 miles offshore most times) from everyone else to bother other boaters too!!
