Anyone good with a 56 johnson 15hp carb?


Gas leak from carb, is it faulty packings?

I have followed initiall settings such as 1 1/2 turns out for s/s needle and 1 turn out for high speed. If I open the s/s just a tad I have gas leaking out the from of the needle. As well the s/s needle appears more worn on the point than the high speed needle.

As well how much should I be priming the carb. I see the gas going into the bowl, but should it completely fill it? When I stop trying to start the motor, I see gas in the air line going back into the motor. In other words back pressure, ( small amount of gas in the air line ).????

If fuel is leaking around the s/s needle then the packing probably needs replacement. Is the nut holding the packing in tight? Was this carb recently rebuilt?

As for the fuel. I find that the bowl is usually around 1/3rds full when the engine is running. Which I find is weird. You'd think it'd have to be full.

And there should be no gas in the air line.

You should pump the primer button a few times until it is hard.
