Hi guys, me again.

Want to clean out the carb on my 1969 40hp Big Twin. How do i go about it?

Do i have to pull it out? Carb cleaner? Just spray the stuff in? Remove and soak?

Seems that i saw somewhere that you could'nt soak these carbs in carb cleaner (for whatever reason).

Any help is good help.

Best way is with elbow grease, remove the carb and disassemble, use carb and choke cleaner with compressed air provided you have air compressor, you could soak it in Chem-dip for about 24hrs but before so, make sure you remove all Plastic and rubber parts and paper gaskets where as Chem-dip will eat them up. Hope this helps...

If you're going the the trouble of removing and breaking down the carb, get a carb kit while you're at it.

Thanx guys!

Just read through some other Big Twin carb postings and I discovered that removing the carb is in fact alot of trouble...not sure i want to go down that route if I don't have to.

Can i just spray carb cleaner down the throat while its running, like we used to do with the old carb cars?

Not too sure about the 2 cycle thing and carb cleaner though.

Any thoughts?

Spraying carb cleaner down the throat of the carb does absolutly nothing. If the carb is dirty and gummed up, you gotta take it apart and clean.

I can have the carb off, completely disassembled, and soaking in a half hour.
You just have to take the starter off, which is 4 easy to get to bolts and 1 electrical connector.
Pop off the carb linkage, then take off the carb (2 bolts)
Take off the bowl, the float, and the drain plug out of the bowl. Remove the welch plug. Remove the needle valve and packing.
Soak the carb body and bowl. After soaking spray out all of the passages with carb cleaner. Bow it out with air. Put it all back together with a carb kit and new gaskets. Put it back and and you're done. It helps to replace all of the old crappy fuel lines while you're at it

Thank you all for the great advice! Unfortunately, it snowed here this weekend, so all carb disassembly plans went out the window! As soon as the weather warms up, I'm going to give it a try!

You guys are great.
