I'm in the process of awakening my '85 Force 50 from a long nap (it's been sitting in the garage under a tarp for 8 years).

I took the carb off, removed the bowl, and found everything squeaky clean. I bought a set of gaskets, replaced everything, fired up the motor, and found the carb bowl leaking gas like crazy.

Any suggestions? Is there a trick to installing the bowl and gasket?

I just installed a new set of gaskets, and I've found that the large one must seat properly in that groove that the bowl sits into.

Second, you must make sure that there is a thin gasket between the bowl and the 'tower' thing that is at the center of the float. Also, you should have a thicker gasket around the nut itself when you tighten the nut into that tower thing.

(sorry if I do not know the correct terms for these parts) :D

You may have hit on the source of my problem! I seem to be missing a gasket. The third one you mention (the one outside the bowl "around the nut itself") seems to be MIA.

BTW, I appreciate your reply. I was reading your post earlier today about your toils with your mid-eighties Force ("Rebuild or just clean"). There is some interesting stuff that I'm sure I'll find useful as I try to get my own motor tuned up and back in the water.

Brian- That last gasket is not normally included in the gasket kit you might have purchased. And it's a weird one. It's not a normal gasket, it's kinda like a thick cloth one. A really thick cloth one. If you have old lawnmower carb with a float bowl kicking around, you might be able to scavenge one off that.

Yea, but it's been kinda fun. However, it's beginning to get cold up around here (first hard frost last night), So I think I will follow John's advice and run it the best I can for the next couple weeks, then button it up over the winter. I'll tackle it next spring, and use the interim time to bone up on the manual.

I don't know what I would have done without John's assistance, or this web site. Well, yes I do...probably spend hundreds..even $1000+ trying to get this thing going. Now all it's costing me is the parts.

The center tower thing is the main jet holder, not that it matters ,because you seem to have fixed yours, now maybe B in W can get his going . good luck, and keep us posted

Doh! I had the thick gasket on the inside of the bowl and NO gasket on the outside. I found that the thin gasket for inside the bowl was part of my gasket kit, but I somehow overlooked it. I moved the thick gasket from inside to outside the bowl. All gaskets are accounted for and in the right spots. I'm going to reassemble everything and, finger crossed, won't have any problems.

In hindsight it seems obvious that the thick gasket inside the bowl wasn't allowing the bowl to fully seat against the perimeter gasket.

Thanks nthrnNYker and moparman for the help.
