So I've cleaned the carbs three times on my engine and it now idles smooth and will power up...for a few minutes. What will rebuidling fix that a good thorough cleaning will not? My problem is it will run good and strong for a few minutes then die. I ran without the silencer and cowl to check the timing, it was advanced 4 degrees, fixed that. Then when running it will start to lose power, give a quick spray of fuel out of the low speed jet, sneeze then stop if I don't get off the throttle fast enough. I don't want to blow her up so I don't want to keep doing this. Squeezing the primer bulb doesn't seem to help. VRO is disconnected, and hose is blocked going into the oil pump. There was a leaky fuel line that is now fixed, and pump seems in good working order. The idle seems a bit high, but Iam not worried about that right now. I checked the head and thermostat housing temp, all 140-141. It fires right back up and idles great...what gives?!?!

Rebuilding a carb means to clean it, install new gaskets and inlet needle and seat. It sometimes means new float as well. When you cleaned it you reused the old components I cited? If so, that may be your issue, as I cannot tell from your writeup.

you have to actually remove and physically clean the jets by hand or it isn't clean, use a stranded copper wire and pull back strands till it just fits in the jet and scrub it in and out a couple times then reinstall, a jet can ''look'' clean and not work correctly.

There should be 3 jets idle, top front of carb, mid, back top of carb adn the main, bottom of float bowl behind the drain screw.

Use Sea Foam and compressed air to clean passages, some of the air in a can works well if you don't have a compressor

You answered what I needed to know. I did not actually replace anything as everything looked new, but since I don't know when anything was replaced then I shall now do that. I only see two removable jets, both physically and on the the parts breakdown on the evinrude site. The one in the bowl and the one at the top of the carb removed from the same side of the carb as the bowl drain, when the last reply says there should be a "idle, top front of carb", is there one I am missing from the side that faces the reed block? Thanks again.

I have an '81 50 and have the 3 jet I mentioned, Idle very front top of carb, mid is at the the back top of carb, left side facing the carb, and the main in the float bowl, there should be 3.

I had mine apart and it "looked" new but still wouldn't run so I replaced the ignition and coils and it still wouldn't run until I actually took the jets out and cleaned them, then it ran like a champ.

Be careful when cleaning the jets. You do not want to enlarge them or damage them. If you can blow then clean with a jet spray carb cleaner or compressed air, that is preferred. Sticking things into the jets is a tricky proposition, and they can be damaged easily.
