I just wanted to get some opinions on whether or not I should replace the gaskets on my carbs when I go ahead and clean them? The motor is a 1998 merc. saltwater so, I'm not sure if they will need replacement?

Re: Carb Cleaning

If you can afford boating you can afford a gasket set for the carbs. If it's a time thing try it without and if they leak you will need to replace them.

Re: Carb Cleaning

When you say you're going to clean them, does that mean you're going to remove and disassemble? Then no question = YES. There are few other goodies in the kit other than gaskets. I would replace the floats too - but I have spares laying around.

You could look at this two ways.

One, you don't replace them, either you get lucky and it works, or you don't, it leaks, floods, or otherwise leaves you adrift AND you have to do the job again.

Two, you get the kit and do it right the first time and life stays good.

Re: Carb Cleaning

The gasket sets are less than $6 ea... Why would you do all the work of pulling them off the engine, then pulling them apart and NOT use new gaskets?
