Carb cleaning?

My 1999 9.9 was running great at neat WOT. Died abruptly. Then would restart and run poorly at WOT when I held the choke on partially. This happened years ago and the shop repaired it and said it was dirt in the carb. Now I don't have access to a shop and know next to nothing about outboard motor repair (like how do I even get into the carb?). I have crab pots in the water that need to be pulled. Any chance I could find the air intake, shoot some carb cleaner in and go get my crab pots out of the water?

Re: Carb cleaning?

Try it. Start it up, fast idle, in neutral, give it some cleaner until it stumbles, let it come back, and do it again. You might try a pair of new spark plugs too. It just might get you going until you have time to clean it properly.
