Carb gasket confusion

I have a 1995 40HP merc...4 cylinder, 2-cycle, w/2 carbs. The model no of the engine is 0G291100. I am replacing the lower jet (the jet/nut that holds the carb bowl on) on the bottom carb. My issue is that the gasket kit has two gaskets that are the same inner and outer diameter but one is thicker and a darker color. The only exploded view parts diagram that I could find shows both being used, one on each side of the bowl. (see http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/543/80.cfm) The gaskets are part no 12 on the diagram and the jet is no 11. The kicker here is, neither carb on my motor had an inside gasket installed when I tore it apart. My question is should I use both and if I do, which gasket goes where? (I am particularly interested/concerned due to the fact that the reason that I am replacing the jet is because I broke it over tightening it....because I used a similar gasket from a lawnmower rebuild kit on the outside....this let the jet bottom out and snap). Any help would be appreciated.
