I have a Rochester Quadrajet (4044289) marine carb. It is on a GM 350 stock marine engine.
It runs great on the idle circuit, but when it is time to dump the gas, it falls flat on its face. I removed the top of the carb and found that the accelerator pumps neoprene boot was off of it. I placed it back on an then manually pushed it down to see if it would pump. It seemed sorta hard, and where the gas should come out, it was barely coming out. So these ports/passages must be severely clogged. It seems that it is the original carb which would be a 77.

PEP Boys has a Holley that will work, but I doubt that it is marine duty. I know on electrical componets it is a no no to use automotive. But what about carbs? And if I cannot use it, can a non-marine carb kit for a Rochester carb work?
Any suggestions greatly appreaciated. Thanks

Re: Carb help

Hi, Mayfloat.
I do know this carb well, and have put rebuild kits in them from "Napa Auto Parts".
If there any differences between the marine qaudrojet and the "Chevy Impalla" Qaudrajet, I am not aware of them....But the kit did the trick on my PennYan,and it had the same problem.
Also, check that little inline filter inside the fuel inlet fitting. They clog up if you talk at it funny.

Re: Carb help

although it sounds like you found the problem, while you are in there, make sure that the metering rod/vacuum piston assembly is free and not seized. It will also cause a hesitation while accelerating if stuck..... :)

Re: Carb help

Thanks, I got around to really taking the rascal apart. Looks pretty near the same that was in my old Blazer (may it rest in pieces). What I understand the differences that are between the automotive and marine are this. All the steel parts such as butterfly shaft, pump arm and the such is brass on the marine carb. Everything on this carb is pretty good. No pitting in the bowl, dirt, or gum. Looks like someone had took it apart earlier on and just cleaned everything without putting a kit in it, which I have done before or other carbs. Going to NAPA tomorrow and get a kit. Then maybe I might be able to get around the lake in one attempt :D
What about injection kits? Are they worth it? I know with carbs, I can usually do something to get back in. Thanks I'll let you know how it goes.
