I have a merc 2.5L with a rochester 2-bbl. and the notorious accelerator pump problem has reared its ugly head again. I have some choices, 3 of them to be exact.

1. drive 3 hours to the place where I bought it from and have them fix it for free

2. go somewhere local and pay for it

3. do it myself.

I have "heard" that these carbs are touchy and I have not messed with a carb in a long time and was curious on how hard is it to replace the accelerator pump.

Also, what should I expect to pay to repair the bad accelerator pump including labor.

Thanks

Re: carb.. how much?

I also have the 2.5 w/ rachester 2 bbl. I rebuilt mine about 2 weeks ago and found it was fairly standard as far as carbs went. I bought the kit from a parts store and sat down at my kitchen table and did it myself. Well it works like a champ. I payed around $40 for the kit and dipping solution to clean. I would recommend taking it to the guy who originally worked on it though (that way he knows that he needs to start paying attention :) ). But short of that i think you should try yourself. If it messes up those are standard carbs and readily available at reasonable costs.

oh yeah....it will prolly be much cheaper to buy a rebuilt from a parts store than have that one rebuilt.

Re: carb.. how much?

it was just rebuilt and just the accelerator pump needs to be replaced. I don't want to mess with floats and stuff since that is pretty touchy, but I do have a service manual.

I am going to call around today and see what pricing would be to fix the pump locally and see if its worth the 3 hour trip each way.

This is the third time they have to replace the accelerator pump, kind of makes you wonder.

yes I talked to him and he said, "Geez, that damn accelerator pump. Bring it down and I will fix it for free or mail it to me."

He is in Ottawa, which is a haul since I am up by Gurnee, not worth the drive down there

Re: carb.. how much?

well, I will be down that way, actually blow right by you, when I move to florida at the end of july.

I am just going to suck it up and do it myself. I am mechanically inclined and know some about carberauters, so I should be dangerous, so if I fail at this, then I will send it down to have it fixed for free. Win win situation!

Re: carb.. how much?

I did it myself, and it runs! It was quite an adventure, but pretty easy if I just remembered where everything went.

The first time I tried changing it out, I took the old one out then put the new one in (I thought) then I realized I put the old one back in (DUH!)

Try #2

Put the new one in this time, but the float pin came out. So I had to take it apart and put it back in

Try #3

Got the float pin in this time. Put it back together, tried to start it and the bowl overflow nozzle started shooting gas out. Whats going on?

Try #4

Took it apart again, looked at an exploded view of the carb, thought maybe the float was in wrong, took it apart adjust the float, put it back together. Samething fuel squirting out the overflow

Try #5

Dad says "Whats this thing" I said "I don't know" as he shows me the float needle that he picked up in the bilge area. Looked at the diagram closely and that thing fell out probably when I first took it apart.

Put the needle back in. Tried to start it, took a while, but she turned over. She started fine! WOO HOO! Total time 3 hours.

Went to go adjust the timing but needed to find TDC, so had to crank the engine over till cylinder #1 was at TDC, that took a while since you don't know where it is, and turning the motor by hand isn't easy.

Found it and marked it on the flywheel with a silver marker. Put in new plugs since the other plugs where: 1. split fire automotive(previous owner), 2. pretty fouled up from all the gas that was dumped.

Went to try to find the mark with the timing light, hard a hard time in the sun. Thought I saw it moved it to 8 BTDC and she purred like a kitten at idle. opened her up a bit and see what she ran like at higher rpms, 2k to be exact, engine was shaking, adjusted it by ear and tried it again at idle, ran smooth and opened it up to 2k again and smooth, happy medium.

So it was a long saturday, but I enjoyed it, it was beautiful day in the high 70s and sunny.
