1990 Johnson 200, 1996 carbs.

I've been through h@#$ with this engine, finally got it to where I thought it was ok but still no joy. First off compression is good and even, around 80 on all cylinders. Spark jumps a 1/2" gap on all cylinders. Fuel tank was pristine when I reinstalled it, boat has brand new fuel/water separator and brand new fuel lines.

Previously it was difficult to start and idled very poorly, I finally found hairline cracks in 2 carbs, and others had bad needle valves (looking at online parts diagrams the carbs that were on it look like they're from a '93 or '94 225 - '90 carbs aren't shown with a needle valve). Since I couldn't find exact replacements for those carbs I opted to buy a complete set of freshly rebuilt carbs from a 1996 Johnson 200. I installed them with new gaskets, did a link & sync, set timing, etc. Now the engine starts much easier, usually on the 2nd try. On muffs it idles somewhat rough for a couple of minutes then settles down and idles pretty well (but with an occasional drop in rpm).

I took the boat to the lake yesterday and the engine started right up but had an intermittent severe rpm drop at idle and would often just die. If I was quick with a lot of throttle I could keep it running but not always. It was kind of hard to tell for sure since the boat stayed on the trailer (I didn't want to risk having to dock and then put it back on the trailer with it idling so bad) but it also seemed like there was a bad bog coming off idle.

Is this the elusive "lean sneeze" I've read about?

Can anyone tell me what the initial setting for the idle needle valve is supposed to be for these '96 carbs? And can someone give me a quick rundown of the procedure for adjusting the needle valves, since I've got a 1990 shop manual (with no carb adjustment possible).

thanks

Re: carb issues

Did you get just the bodies or complete set with throttle plates?

Complete set with throttle plates.

Is it possible for something else altogether to be causing this issue like the recirc valves or something else I've overlooked?

Re: carb issues

My manual directs that the float bowl should be inverted and a straight edge placed across the bowl mating surface. The Float should be level with the bowl mating surface within 1/32".

Re: carb issues

How reliable is the source for the rebuilt carbs?
Some people think cleaning out the bowl, spray everything with carb cleaner and it's 're-built'

If you're getting the lean pop, have you taken apart the fuel lines to each carb?
I've seen the plastic connectors cracked, ran good but still sucked air.
Is the bulb staying hard?

I would have pushed it over to the dock, nothing like bumping up the idle while the leg is in water.

Well, I've got no reason to think I was lied to about the rebuilt carbs. It does in fact start way better than before. What I'm guessing is that either I need to adjust the idle mixture (hence my question about the recommended procedure), or else something else is going on.

The fuel line and primer bulb are both brand new (bought right here on iboats) and the primer bulb stays hard. I looked over the fuel fittings etc. when installing the carbs and they all seemed fine. In fact, since those are on the pressure side of the fuel pump I'd expect to see fuel leaking out of those with the engine running if there were a problem, and that's not happening.

The recirt valves will figure into how good the mtr idles. I've had mtrs where the carbs were rebuilt and still wouldn't idle correctly. Went through the recirt system, replaced the bad valves and nozzles and all was fine.

Re: carb issues

I have never had a newer motor with those type carbs, but I would assume the adjustments are made very much the same as the old ones. I would read through the top secret file as I seem to remember something being in there on how to make the carb adjustments.

Re: carb issues

Metric, if those have the adjustable idle mixture you have to adjust them: A) in the water with engine at temp B) Engine in gear and untied/teetered. Usually a good starting piont is 5 turns out from a light seat. Remember that these are reversed as CW is richer and CCW is leaner.

PM me and I will help if I can on the carbs. When I sent them to you, they were perfectly adjusted from an engine on my test stand. PM me or give me a call. I want you happy with this purchase.

that is only true on the adjustable air bleed style carbs on certain older motors.

The 1996 model in question normally uses 6 turns out for a starting point and CW makes the mixture leaner by restricting the fuel flow to the idle ports.

Thanks.

Sent you a pm. I haven't had a lot of time to mess with boat engines (or get online) this week because of Thanksgiving and honey-do's.
