Carb leaks after raising engine.

So I did a search and really nothing seemed to pertain to my issue. I have a 79 80hp.
I started by priming the engine, and starting it. After shutting it off, I raised the engine to the up position. The carb started to leak out. I cleaned everything, lowered the engine, started it, and shut it off again. No leak! So I raised it once againe to the up position, and it started leaking. What am I dealing with? Is there an easy fix, or a carb rebuild in order? How much would I expect to pay for a carb rebuild if it is needed?

Gee, you cannot defy the law of gravity, no matter how hard you try. The motor and carbs are acting normal. It should leak every time you tilt it up.

Are you serious? I would think for safety reasons, you would not want fuel leaking anywhere on a boat.

Its more a spill from the bowls than a leak.

Toy, You will see a black plastic tray under the carbs. It has a drain hose to the lower cowl. It is designed to catch any spilled fuel and dump it overboard. Merc knew the carbs would leak

Yup.. they dump alot of gas at full tilt..lol. i feel bad everytime i have to dig rocks out of my jet and i have to trim it all the way up.. because i get a oil slick..

The float bowl on a carburetor is like a cup. Fill it with water, milk, beer, soda or whatever and tilt it about 55 degrees and much of the contents will spill. Yup -- that's gravity at work. If the picture is typical of how high you raise the engine, then it is way higher than it needs to be for trailering.

Pretty sure mine goes into air box and gets sucked out via vac/bleed hose.
