Re: carb not picking up fuel

I have not tried another tank i do not have one to try.I dont think it has a antisiphon valve? It only has a hose that goes to the tank witch goes to a fitting with a tube on the end.(which picks up the gas) And the hose goes to the separator and it can travel freely to the separator.

Many times it looks like a regular 90 degree brass fitting. You almost have to take it apart to see. Try this before you buy another pump. Take the pump off and put a hose in the inlet and place the hose in a gass can. Pump the fuel pump lever and see if gass is pumped, try to put the pump above the gas can at least 2 if not 3 feet. If it can lift 3 feet and supply good flow it may not be the pump

You haven't tried the suggestions posted so you haven't tried everything.

Re: carb not picking up fuel

.... why would a regular automobile mechanical pump not work?

Marine pumps are made to dump fuel in the oil side of the engine block or carb on failure instead of outside. This is a safety thing. You don't want fuel or vapors in a boat.

Ouch!!! No... That's how explosions occur.

A marine mechanical pump has 2 diaphragms, made of different materials. When the first one fails, the second one STOPS fuel being dumped into the engine. There is a port and hose (connected to the top of the carburetor) between the diaphragms that pushes the fuel into the air horn on the carburetor, stalling out the engine. Once the engine is stalled the pump can't move any more fuel, and all the explosive stuff stays where it belongs (and more importantly, out of where it can cause problems).

Go to wal mart and get a 5 gal red gas can, buy some fuel line and run the fuel line directly to the fuel/water separator intake. Make sure the separator is full, and put some fresh 87 octane in the gas can. Again, I'd say spray b12 in the fuel pump, all the lines, and in the bowl of teh carb too.

The anti-siphon valve is what the fuel line hooks to on the tank. You need to verify the fuel pump as that is the likely issue here. You can rent a gauge from Auto Zone for example. Up until now you are just guessing at what the problem is. And forget the electric fuel pump. When you are done with buying a block off plate, adding another oil pressure switch, doing some wiring you will have the cost of the mechanical pump that in the long run, is more reliable than electric anyway.

Recently had a fuel problem...gas wasn't quite making it to the (electric)fuel pump...turned out to be there was a small crack in the fuel hose near the hose clamp, so it was just trying to suck air instead.

Re: carb not picking up fuel

my auxillary fuel tank was a 1 gallon plastic jug with a hole drilled into the cap. The hole ID was slightly undersized from the OD of the 36" fuel line i bought. I crammed the fuel line thru the cap and hung the jug upside down like an IV so gravity could do it's thing. I then connected to the fuel/water separator and ran the 1/2 gallon of gas out of the jug. It never leaked and worked like a champ.

Re: carb not picking up fuel

ok so i ran it on my other boat tank and ran perfect! So i checked the tank and found out it has been rigged.smh!!! My tank is 6 inches deep how long should the tube be or the whole unit.i think the tube was touching the bottom of the tank not letting in much fuel.or had a air leak not sure but will fix both when i put it back together.I can not post pics it will not let me.

Re: carb not picking up fuel

The tube can touch the bottom so long as there is a 30 to 45 degree cut in the tube which allows for fuel to be picked up

ok i tightened up all the fuel lines and put it back together and seems to pump gas now.It went to run it and it runs like junk now off my tank but i do know the gas is very bad.maybe a few years old. Im going to pump it out and clean the carb again. Thanks for all the help.

Re: carb not picking up fuel

Bad gas will give you the problem all by it self. Your filter should have stopped most all forgien matter. Suggest pumping old gas out and replacing with new as you mentioned. Maybe leave the carb alone until after you tried it with new gas. May need to throttle pump the carb to get the gas out.
