The top carburator on my 1994 225 is spraying fuel out of the port-side throat (i.e. into the air intake cover). None of the other carbs are doing this. Any thoughts on the cause? The engine sounds and runs somewhat rough, with a fair amount of smoke at idle speed. Smells like there is a fair amount of unburned gas exhausting out. I pulled the plugs and they are uniformly oily but otherwise clean.

Whatsup Richmond? I am in C'ville. Is it spitting fuel when running only? Is it leaking when not running?

Harrisonburg here, here's a suggestion from outboard repair in this forum
"If you are experiencing a lot of sprayback out of one carb it might indicate bad reeds. This will also be evident as a loss of power/ poor idle/ stalling because that cylinder isn't running well, if at all."

Nice. What up H-burg? That unburnt gas must be blowing by that bad reed. Nice find Trek!

As far as I know, just when it's running. I gave the carbs the Sea Foam treatment today and wiped around the openings to clean things up. I'll check tomorrow to see if it leaks overnight. Towed the boat to Cape Charles for a long spring break weekend with the family. It had been five months since the motor had been started. Ran well at WOT, but somewhat smokey and stinky at troll and idle.

Thanks for the tip about the reeds. As far as I know the reeds are original. I bought the boat from a colleague four years ago and from what he's told me the motor received very little maintenance when his family owned it. It's been a reliable motor despite that, always starts and generally runs well. Just within the last year its started idle rough and put out more smoke than it should.

Well I am pretty sure that the reeds only really get bent when being serviced. They sometimes get carbon build-up on them, which is a pain, but either way it sounds like you need to pull that carb. If the motor hasnt had any maintenance a de-carb and fuel pump change is more than in order, and maybe a waterpump and spark plugs just to be safe.
