I have a 160hp Merc. in I think a 79' Cutter. Anyway, There is somthing wrong with the carb, after it boat fires up gas floods into the carb and it dies out. Now ive had it all apart and the needle and floater look good but its almost as if its staying open and the gas is just being pushed right through... Any ideas..

Thanks

Re: Carb Problem

Sounds like the needle and seat are sticking open..Did you rebuild it or just take it apart?
If you just took it apart you will need a rebuild kit anyway...

Re: Carb Problem

I rebuilt the carb. Its a brand new needle and seat.
The needle idle ajustment has a notch at the end of the pin, would that affect it?

Thanks

Re: Carb Problem

The Idle adj will not affect this. Check your float level. Did u replace float , needle and seat? Float may be sticking. If it is a brass float it may have a hole and be full of fuel or a foam float that can get heavy from saturation What model carb do you have ?

Re: Carb Problem

I didnt replace the float but i replaced the needle and seat. Its about a 1979 Rochester Carb. The float is brass... how do you check if there is a hole in the floater..? and a hole in the floater would cause the excessive gass in the carb?

Thanks

take the float and shake it. if you can feel fluid inside junk it. Check the retaining pin that holds the float in place, this is held down by the top of the carb when in place. this is where they normaly stick. Check the float level also. also check to see that the metering valve is not stuck open. very common also

Re: Carb Problem

You sure you used the right gaskets under the brass seat for the needle? It's possible that the tang on the float is contacting something before the needle is fully closed. I can't think of anything else that would cause this.

Where does the fuel come from? Knowing that might help.
