I have 1972 johnson 50hp top cylinder keeps fouling out the plug at idle will clean up and run at higher rpms. I cheched the coils even went so far as to switch them with no change. one thing i have noticed is the top carb is misting fuel out. I had this carb off and checked the float level and it seemed fine also the fuel seems to be coming out the main jet. Is it possible for a reed to be bad and cause pressure in that carb and causeing this problem. I have quite a bit of 4 cycle experience but am a little short on 2 cycle

Re: carb problem

M Kenyon,

I doubt it's a reed. However, a non sealing carb. needle/seat will cause the carb. to flood.

Re: carb problem

If you are getting mist out the carb throat I would not rule out a leaky or broken reed. The only way air can be made to flow out of the carb is via the reed plate.

When you pull the carb to check the float needle seat, as DJ suggests, inspect the reeds as well.

Good luck. :)
