I am pretty sure I have a 1959 10 hp evinrude (#10018-14096). Anyway, I was out w/it last year for the first time since I owned it and it started fine and ran but when I opened it up it ran only as fast as a 5 hp would (which I owned for years). I started messing with the carb adjustments (rich, lean, etc.) and she opened up a little more, maybe like a 6 or 7 hp. I kept messing with it and she died. I can't get her started now and don't know what the original setting is for tuning the carb. I need to put the carb adjustments back to what they should be to start fine tuning them. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.
Also, when I was running the same engine that one time last year and I opened here up, she would run for about a minute and then die as if she ran out of gas. She kept doing this every time I opened her up all the way. If I kept her at only 50 or 75% she wouldn't die. Anyone know why this is? Thanks in advance.

Hi Kuziak,
A few things to check -
Is your motor still running the pressure tank system (2-hoses from tank to motor)? If so, when the motor dies, if you were to open the tank cap, does it hiss out air? If not, then you're not building up pressure.
Do you have good spark on both cylinders? Have you checked the coils for cracks? You should be able to pull one of the plug wires off with the engine running and note whether or not there is a difference in power output. If it stalls completely and instantly, then you were only running on that cylinder. Also, have you run a compression check?
Is the motor pumping cooling water? When was the last time the pump impeller was replaced?
Have you disassembled and cleaned the carburetor? Float level is set as per the book? Gasket between the carb base and main nozzle standpipe is present and in good shape?

Problem could be many things - eliminate what it ISN'T and we can help you from there....

- Scott
