Carb Problems!

Hi, I recently bought an '87 Yamaha Outboard 200hp ETLH. I've been running through the boat and motor checking everything since the boat has been sitting up for 2 yrs. New spark plugs, water pump, 3 new batteries later, a new problem presents itself. All 3 carbs have a certain piece broken on them(which i noticed when i disassembled them to clean). One of the previous owners tried to glue some sheet metal over the gaps where the pieces are missing. Im assuming this is causing my engine to not run w/out starter fluid( was able to get it running, but had to keep my foot in it, and it died whenever i put it in gear) >.< At first, i was planning on trying to just get the broken part, then it occurred to me that if they tampered w/ that no tellin what else they screwed up, so maybe 3 new carbs is best option. I'd like some feedback on what you guys would do. Also, if this particular carb is a hard one to get, would it be possible to get a carb from another model/engine to fit and run right? ( I found the part on a couple sites, but they are on back order, and $341.00 each=$1023 total >.< HELP

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Click on post reply, Then scroll down till you will see "manage Attachments" click on that it will open a window click on 'Browse' that should open your Documents find your pictures. You might have to resize them. Then after you resize them you just double click on them. Click upload that will post them. Clear as mud.............You need to play with them for awhile. You will figure it out.

Got it. I think. Let me know if you cant see these, but i think they are working. I kept clicking the insert image button before. Thanks for advice!

As you can see, its like they broke a shutter off or somethin, and tried to glue some makeshift pieces on. They did it on all 3 carbs, but switched sides on which they glued the pieces.

Thanks Again,
Andy

Re: Carb Problems!

Looks like someone tried to modify the choke plates on all three carbs. Probably from hard starting, thinking they could help the engine in starting and running procedures. I don't know of any carburetor kit that you could locate that would just sell these choke plates. In fact, I don't know if you could buy them separately. You might check with a Yamaha Outboard dealer to see if they could locate these plates.

There is a Yamaha 200 hp carburetor on ebay for BIN $59.99 now. It appears it would work on your engine.

Re: Carb Problems!

somebody was definatly playing.
the choke sutter bottoms were origially hinged and cpring loaded so at start uo the engines were difficult for the operator to over choke,
they did anyway.
