I have a 84 Sunbird fish$ski with a Volvo 3.0 Stern Drive and Out Drive (White outdrive) I beleive this to be eaither a timing or Carb adjustment issue (have not checked timing yet)

When I start her up she runs fine but if I give a little throttle she seems to starve for fuel and bogs down and or backfires, if I go WOT she may do the same thing and I have to basically pull back and give a little throttle easy to go back to WOT.

What is the best way to check the Idle/Air adjustment? I looked for a post out by Don S but could not locate it, I believe the timing is dead on as the belt was replaced before I bought it.

Idle adjustment is just that. . . IDLE adjustment. This only affects the idle mixture and has nothing to do with running at higher than idle speeds. If you're only having problems when accelerating and it's fine once it gets there, it's more than likely your accelerator pump.

Timing belt has nothing to do with ignition timing, but I agree that you issue is more than likely the accelerator pump. However, for a few dollars more you can rebuild the entire carb.

What model is your engine? You sure it is a 3.0L? How long have you owned it?

OOPS!!!

I even commented on it, and didn't catch it.

No timing belt on a 3.0.

Carb was rebuilt prior to purchase.

How long ago was that? The reason I say this is depending on how old the gas in the carb is, the accel pump could already be clogged up.

Also, who knows how well the carb was rebuilt. I would still be considering it as the problem.

Yes 3.0 to the best of my knowledge I have had this boat for about 3 weeks prior to that I had a 89 Sunbird with a Johnson 110.

Here is my Hull ID if anyone can assit:

SB277009J485

The DNR registration say's it is an 84 but the boat was advertized as a 86 and the HID looks like an 85 on the sunbird forums the boat starts at 85 and up and the Sunbird 177 and came with a 140HP.

I am pretty new to outboards so please forgive my ignorance.

I doubt you have a 3.0L, since Volvo didn't start using them till 94, and then only with the SX style drives.
Look on the port side of the engine around the distributor and fuel pump area. There should be a tag rivited to the block. You need to know what the model number is. It will start with AQ then have 3 numbers followed by a letter . (Example AQ125B)

That's really not true. A bad idle adjustment can lead to bogging for a number of reasons--fouled plugs being one of them. Could be the idle circuit is too rich. I've had that problem myself.

Ok folks this is waht I have

AQ 125 A

I looked at the card while on the lake last night and noticed the the bolts holding the carb down were a little loose and also the 4 screws on the underside were loose (I did not install this carb btw) I tightened them up and it stopped sucking air as this was what most of the problem is. Now I need help with the carb/throttle adjustments since they are out of whack a little, do I treat this with a trained ear for a good sounding idle or are there special steps on the water I need to perform?

In the mists of troubleshooting one of the hoses came off of the carb and I cannot find the hole for the end that goes to the engine, it is the hose that is on the left of the card if you were facing the rear of the boat towards the water, it may be the overflow hose but not sure.

I did, there is no fuel coming out of this hose it looks like the over flow hose it is not the fat hose going to the center of the carb.

If it's the clear hose it goes from the fuel pump to the carb. Safety item...
