Carb question

I have a 1989 Black Max xr4 and while running it the other day it just slowed down in the middle of the lake. From that point forward it ran about 5 mph less than it has always run at top speed. My dad says that the carb sucked something up into it. Is there any way to resolve this problem without rebuilding the carb, or any other suggestions as to what the problem may be. Thank you..

Re: Carb question

Well it could be a lot of things.First how do you know it's 5 mph slower? GPS or water pressure type speedo ? Lets say you do have a speed drop what was your WOT before and after? Is your prop been hit ? Have you done any service to the motor of late? ie:how are your spark plugs and fuel filter or filters ? Have you checked your compression? Have you made sure you are still getting full travel from your throtle cable ? Are the carb shutters all in snyc. and opening fully .And when all or any of this is ruled out maybe start looking at the carbs.

Re: Carb question

I run my boat 2-3 times a week. No the prop has no been hit. It had a complete overhaul this summer. All of the pistons were replaced and so was the ignition system. The speed drop of 5mph is from both my speedometer and my gps. All i was wondering is if it is the carb, is there anything i can do to loosen up/break up whatever it sucked up to keep it from getting worse and get the speed back.

Re: Carb question

If it is a carb/carbs problem the only way to do it right is to remove them and clean them out .That way you know all the jets and passages are clear. There is no other way to make sure to get all if any crap that may be in the bowls. But as I said in the last post to check those other things first even if the engine was just done last summer.
