Re: carb question.

Wait, do you have the 2 metering rods #7 in the Pic.??? I did not think the engine would run without a power valve spring? Are you sure it's not there?
This I gotta see? You've gotta figure the metering rods are being sucked down by vacuum, closing off the main jets with no spring to hold them open. If this is the case, please don't mess with anything else on the carb till you get this done, & try it! If this is as you say, I'd bet it's your only problem.

Many, yrs ago, when I was much younger, I was looking for performance, and I removed the primary metering rods from my Qjet, leaving the jets wide open
Big Mistake! The car ran, but a total bog, with black smoke out the exhaust, and I could see the gas gauge go down, as I drove it! It was the opposite of what you have, running Way too Rich! I couldn't get the metering rods back in fast enough, and decided not to try that again

I am postive there is no power valve spring under the power valve. I should of known better when I took the carb apart and was looking at the diagram of the carb when I was putting it togather. But I did not know. Like I said first time every working on a QJ. I feel real dumb at this point but I guess I will live and learn. I guess when I was working on it

I was thinking when I put it togather that spring should probley be there , but I thought maybee marine carbs don't have that. The guy at napa looked up the part and crossed the number into a napa rebuild kit. I thought that it was for a auto carb, but the guy told me they were the same. So looking at the diagram I figured that was there because it coverd auto too. My dumb mistake.

Also yes I am sure the metering rod's are there but your story sounds pretty funny though.

First time working on a Qjet, You're excused ;) By the way, if you look at the link from Imported John, you don't have any other parts missing do you?

"Jeah mang, we don't need no stinking metering rods, they only get in the way mang, Dey only block the gas flow, mang, Do Jou kno what I mean" :D Oops!

Now that is funny!! Ok carb update and were Iam now. I worked on the carb first thing this moarning got it all back togather with a power valve spring in it. I also paid close attion to make sure there wasnt any thing else I was missing and there wasnt. But I did find one other mistake I found when rebuilding the carb.

The top gasket that would normaly go under the power valve, the flap that would normaly go under it, if you ever had a QJ apart you should know what I am talking about. Well I forgot to put the flap part of the gasket under it. God I feel like such a rookie!

From the tech article I found from jet performance I followed the direction perfectly and put it all back togather. I put the carb back on the boat started it up adjusted idle and of I went to the river in sacramento. I didnt get there until 11 am and it was already pretty packed.

So I took it up the river let it warm up and did a full wot run from a stop and the bog has gone away alot really works a ton better. I was so happy. I did not get a chance to try and adjust any thing as it would of meant sitting in the middle of the river fooling with it while people were flying by. Folsom lake is a puddle so every one is going to the river cause it is the only place close by to do any boating.

I would really like to thank every one for helping me out and pointing me in the right direction. I know there is still some fine tunning that needs to be done but it is 95% better. JP

OK, The gasket is supposed to lay over the little round plastic retainer, and the power valve, so you got it right. That's why it has 2 slits in it to slip over the metering rods. Ha, ha, been doing this all from memory ;) Glad to hear it's working better now.
