the choke plate will close when the engine is cold, and you run the throttle all the way to the wot position once. on mine, i can hear it go closed. it sounds like, ting. after the engine has started, the heat from the engine will warm up the bimetal spring inside the choke housing. this spring will unwind slowly and allow the choke plate to come to it's normal operating temp position, which is straight vertical and full open..
on my L6, when i start it, i pump it once to wot which sets the choke, then i'll start it. it runs rich and a shade rough, but within moments, the engine will start to run smoother as the choke starts to pull open as the engine starts to warm and the bimetal spring starts to unwind....
