This is a general question about rebuilding a carb... I only ask because some of you may have read that I hired a mechanic that may have taken me for a little more than his talent allowed...

oh, heck, I was ripped off and want to know how bad.

If you take apart a carb to rebuild it - can you tell of the throttle plate is shot/worn? or is this something that you only know if you do a rebuild and then put it back together.

I hope you can only tell after, because that means i didn't just waste $500...

I know, I think JB said it was a 50/50 shot at rebuild anyway (after it was already had it torn apart). I already spent that money and now know we have a worn throttle plate and need a new/rebuilt carb that runs about $600.

(PS - i am looking into flyingfish as recommended in a previous thread... maybe I can get lucky for once)

Re: Carb question

The plates themselves do not wear, only the shaft and bushings that the shaft rotates in.

and...

You can tell if the throttle plate shaft bushings are worn while the carb is still attached to the intake manifold :(

Re: Carb question

You got the hose, $500 is going rate for a full restore, anodizing and everything throttle plate bushings the works, I had the service performed through Holley for a rare unique 4 bbl carb, vintage Nascar, it came back looking new.

Re: Carb question

Depends on the kind of carb.

Last year a Carter AFB was redone and put back on for around that price. on a 340 Chrysler marine.

Some "mechanics" will take it to the carb shop and mark it up and you get the hose.
