carb question

JUST bought a 1973 evenrude 18 horse 18304a there is a knob for low / rich adjustment and someone has taken off the connecting rod to the carb how can i reset this? So i can start frm original adjustment. And when in gear moter off i have a 1/4 turn slop in propeller is this normal and where is the slop i rebuild transmissions so this is driving me nuts is is hard not to tear it apart.

You can adjust the needle where it screws into the carb. Gently close it and then back it out about 1.5 turns to start. 1/4 turn slop in propeller is normal - just the distance the prop shaft turns before the clutch dog engages the gear.
