Hello! I've owned my boat and motor about 16 months; motor is '89 Johnson J60ELC 60HP w/VRO disabled. Local dealer did 12 month service last winter; motor checked out fine (good compression, etc.) I will begin doing maintenance/service myself. Only problem during this time is I had to increase idle RPM to 820-850 or motor would run rough and cut off at 700-750 RPM as recommended in service manual. I suspect "rich" mixture because of occasional raw/unburned oil/gas under cowl and on GC and dark sooty stains under upper exhaust ports below cowl. I plan to rebuild carbs because of above problem and also unknown prior maintenance of motor. Would anyone recommend a diffent approach based on above info? Try adjusting idle mixture?
I have some questions about rebuild.
1) Are the fuel line "clamps" just wire ties or do I need "factory" type ties?
2) Can I use regular "LocTite" instead of factory "ScrewLoc"?
3) Any advantage to OMC/Bomb. rebuild kit vs. online kit?
4) Is there any danger in trying to adjust idle mixture leaner if carb rebuild doesn't solve problem.
5) I read on another site about an OMC Service Bulletin recommending changing the size of the main jets. How can I find out about any other Service Bulletins which may apply to this motor?

I really enjoy this website. I have been "lurking" in the background for a number of months. The information and help provided by the "regulars" here is amazing! I don’t' know very much, but I know alot more than I did! Thanks in advance...Tolstoy out
