Hello,
I am working on rebuilding the carb on my 84 15hp evinrude model E15RCRM and have some questions about the plugs that came in the rebuild kit. I tried doing a search but did not really find anything.

1. What is the best way to remove the old plugs? They seem soft enough that i could just punch them with an awl or something and pry then out but I am worried about damaging the carb housing or what's underneath. Please advise.

2. How are the new ones installed? Does the dome face the outside or inisde and what should be used to flatten them?

3. The kit came with three plugs but I only see two on my carb. Is the extra one for a different model or am I missing something?

4. Is there anything else I should watch for when assembling the carb?

Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: carb rebuild questions on 84 15hp Evinrude

1. You can remove the plugs 2 ways. You can drive a sharp awl into the center and pry sideways to remove. You can use a 1/8 inch drill bit too. Drill just deep enough to go through. There's a bit of room underneath (approx 1/4 inch), then pry out with a nail or awl.

2. Install the new plug with the crown (convex side) up. Use a flat drift to flatten the crown level to seal it. Some use a small bit of gasket sealer on the outside of the plug edge before insertion to aid in the sealing. It won't take much force to flatten the core plug. Some have used the square end of a 3/8" socket extention to seat the plug with good results.

3. Carb kits come with parts for several carb models. You'll probably have left over parts.

4. Yes, don't smack you fingers with the hammer while seating the core plugs.......

Make sure the carb is clean. Use spray carb cleaner, followed with compressed air.
