i have a 1972 9.8 hp merc. serial # 3267352. my question is this. my carb is seaping fuel. i'm sure the gaskets are all original and need to be replaced. my local boat shop seems pretty crappy seeing how i've taken it there for other issues before and they never fail to mess something up. so, is rebuilding a carb something that the average joe could handle? i've worked on cars quite a bit, but never on a boat motor. i was thinking of getting a repair manual and a gaskit kit and trying this one myself, but thought i'd get some opinions first. also, which repair manuals are best? thanks.

Re: carb rebuild

Welcome to iBoats.

Yes get a manual. I prefer the Merc genuine, but some others here like the Selco or Clymer.

A carb rebuild is something you should be able to handle, they are a lot simplier that a Rochie for example. Just don't go cheap. Remember, a fire on a boat is something you can't run away from!

Chris.........

Re: carb rebuild

which manual has more illustrations? being that i'm not sure what all the pieces are actually called, a picture may be more helpful.

bp

Re: carb rebuild

See my advice in another thread - I have the factory and Seloc manuals for that motor and the carb diagrams are identical. Good luck.
